Horsepower gearbox rating

Can someone explain the horsepower rating on gearboxes? Is this a max., does the tractor HP need to stay below this rating or what?

I believe it is the max HP that the pto should put into it for continuous operation at the rated rpm. So if your gearbox is rated at 60HP you can use it on any tractor that's rated 60 PTO HP and below.

The gearbox maybe rated in HP but that HP is at a rated rpm of say 540, 1000 or what ever. A 1000rpm 75 HP gearbox has to handle only about 1/2 the torque of a 540rpm 75 HP gearbox.

Good input Indy, also keep in mind too to check the shear bolt size. In particular on posthole diggers, if you have a 1/2 inch grade 2, it doesn't matter if you have a 75 hp box, it won't do any better than a 30 hp gearbox because the bolt will shear at the same load.

That rating is what the gearbox can handle as "input horsepower" on a sustained basis. So yes you need to stay below that with tractor power. Also, look at the DRIVELINE rating. SOME cheaper equipment will have a high horsepower rated gearbox, only to have a pto shaft that isn't rated as high.
