My order got screwed up and ended up with with a double order, company said keep the seed. Got enough silver Queen for this year and next. Question is can I keep them that long? I was thinking if left in brown paper bag in refridgerator just about any seed sould be good untill next year. Is there any other toughts to this? Thanks for any information.
Dan

Sweet corn, in my experience, has a shorter shelf life than other corn. Having said that, keep it airtight, keep it in the dark, and keep it cool for the best result.

Thanks for all who replied. I'll keep the corn and try to germinate next year, again thanks for the information.

I always put the lefover seed in a refrigerator but it is a small amount since I never buy over a pound of Merit for the garden. The outside air here in SC would be wetter at times over the winter. I plant the old seed thick and plan to thin it (which is what I need to be doing now) Got a perfect stand on old seed this time. KEH

I plant a few acres of field corn for the deer and turkey. Last year I planted seed from the year before and never knew the difference. I planted half a bag the other day and will keep the other half for next year. I have done this several times. Mine are going in a five gallon plastic can in a dry place.

I would think refreg would be too moist. Cool & dry is best, dry & stable (warmer) temp is ok.

Common to keep the seed for a year or maybe 2 - for corn anyhow. Tomoato seed can be kept 25 years or so, soybeans really don't last a year. Will depend on the crop, I think you are talking sweet corn????

Next early spring put some sand in a can, layer of cloth, drop 10 seeds in, layer of cloth, more sand, wet it down. Keep it about the temp you plan to plant in, check it in a week & see what sprouts, that's your germination %. If you got 9 plants, you are good to go. If you got 7-8, might want to plant heavy. If it doesn't look good, time to order more seed!

I typically have a 50lb bag or 2 left over after planting field corn, how much is 'a lot' left over to you?

How much seed are we talking about? We always keep our extra seed and use it in the event that we run short or to prime the hoppers. The cost of a small amount of seed can easliy be wasted with poor germination. If you are going to save it I recommend using a beer cooler. The larger seeds have a shorter shelf life. My records indicate average seed life of corn is one year. You can always do a germination test early next year to know for sure.
