NH 66 / loose strings on bales

I have a NH 66 that I have set to make 30" bales. I just finished up a first cutting of orchard grass, and the baler made nice. consistent 45 - 50 lb. bales, and the bales were the right size in the chute. But the strings were too loose by about 2", so that the bales expanded a bit once they exited, and were a bit floppy to handle. The baler is knotting just fine.

This baler has a twine tensioner on top of the twine compartment, and I have that adjusted so that it takes maybe a 10 lb. pull to move the twine. My hay dogs appear to be working correctly.

I would appreciate any advice on how I can get the strings tighter, without increasing bale weight. I have a manual, but I am confused as to whether string tension is only controlled by the twine compartment tensioner or does twine disc tension also affect it?

Thanks,

Michael

Sounds to me that the hay was to green!

Almost everyone here has given correct answers for possibilities but, I would suggest that you will never get a 45-50 lb 30" bale with this baler. Also a 45-50 lb bale out of the baler will weigh 35-40 lb in 3 months. Forget the twine tension as it has nothing to do with the tighness of the twine on the bale. You need to do some experimenting along the lines of what has been suggested by these good folks....Good luck.

If you baler has compression springs, tighten them down 5 turns each. If it helps, keep going until the bales are tight enough to suit.

When you say twine disc tension do you mean the twine retainer disc in the knotter? That has no bearing on the twine tension itself, it just holds the twine in the knotter assembly.

I'm guessing from a distance, but forget the twine tension. It sound OK. Add wedges so the bale hangs tigher in the chamber. The hay needs to be compressed more so that when it is released it will spring back and give tight string. You might have to re-adjust the length to what you want. Some balers just don't like to make too light or too heavy bales. Every field of hay bales different...and at different times of day.
