How Much HP for a NH269 baler

How much is enough to run one of these older balers,with or without wagon. I havent run it yet and have 30HP and 90HP, but gotta do some repairs on the 90Hp and it might not be available when i need it.

jack: I'd be willing to bet 30 hp tractors have baled a lot more hay in the past 70 years than 90 hp tractors have. I farmed with Farmalls 130, 300, 504, 560, 656 and 1066. That old Farmall 300 still holds the record on my farm for most bales per day. I will admit 1066 was never hooked to a baler.

You see, haying with small square bales is more about manpower than tractor power. Help was much easier to find back when 300 was new. I have also baled a few loads with Farmall 130, NH S-69, thrower and wagon. Level ground, and was material that got too dry for haylage, rather than take other tractors off haylage, I baled it up with 130.

Heck, we're running a 268 hayliner with a '49 JD B. And pulling a 100 bale haywagon to boot! Even with hilly ground not too much trouble. Our '56 Farmall 200 has proven a bit light for some of the hills, tends to spin and dig up the sod - gotta be a bit more careful! Neither of these tractors would push 25hp today. No live power either! Just gotta know what you're doing, and not try to set any tonnage records!

My 35 Ferguson handles it fine. I pull a basket behind my 269 with it. Wouldn"t want to tackle a steep hill with it full though.

You will have no trouble with 30 hp, but be very careful with a wagon on behind, especialy on a hill. Roy

Well if its any thing like an old JD-14T the 30 hp will be a little small but if it has live pto it may do the job. The 90HP is over kill. I pulled my 14T with an Oliver 77 and it played with it, the 77 is rated at 38HP
