Hello all,

While prepping the bush-hog yesterday, I noticed that the gearbox is leaking oil almost as quickly as I add it.

Can I just fill that sucker with grease? Or do I need to pull the whole thing apart and replace the leaking seal..? The implement is only used 5-6 times a year.

Thanks

BillOH

I picked up seals the other day for an old bush hog model 502 at the local NH dealer, they were $3.50 each..

I use Lubriplate #105 grease. It is sold as a motor rebuilding grease (for that initial lube you want B4 the oil circulates).

It is thinner than grease, but thicker than 140wt and stays very well. It slings internally better than grease and as a result I think it lubes better.

Part of the job of oil in the box is to dissipate heat from the gears. To do that it needs to contact the housing. Grease may not do that.

You really should do the repair correctly as others have suggested. Maybe just a seal has gone bad, which is no big deal to fix. Make sure to check the shaft the seal rides on, often the shaft is worn or pitted and is a big part of the problem. The right size speedi-sleeve will let you fix the shaft up nicely.

Usually I get better availability and pricing on bearings, sleeves and seals from the local bearing shops than I do from the tractor/implement dealers.

I had that happen to me, didn't use it much either, so I just put 120 weight oil in it, but it don't take much to replace the seal, and better for your unit, your choice my friend....

Yes you can fill the gear box with grease, as there's enough heat generated to melt the grease and keep it going into the berrings ect...

Still, replaceing the seal is a good idea as like one other poster said, maybe the berring (or shaft) is bad too??

Hey billOH, I did the same thing last year to my B/hog, but I found why the seal went bad- The bearing WAS in PIECES! That caused the shaft to wobble and eat the seal.

Be sure to check the weld on the Blade Bar pan assembly. It has a piece welded on the top of the blade bar that broke loose on my mower and ruined the blade bar pan assembly. Cost to replace $644.

it's best to replace the seal. filling with grease may cause cavitation and not lube the gears properly. grease is fine for a slower turning implement like a hay rake gearbox, but not a bushhog.
