I've found a Allis Chalmers 4 bottom 16" bottom semi-mount hydraulic plow with hillside hitch that interests me. I think it is a model 2000. It needs some new hoses for the hydraulic trip cylinders & some welding done to the plate where the hitch bolts on. One of the arms that goes down to the 1st bottom has been welded. The points, moldboards ect. are in fair condition. Both cylinders for the hillside hitch & to raise the rear of the plow are there but I'm not sure if they work. I don't know if the hydraulic trip cylinders work either. Can anyone give me any information on one of these? Do they plow well? How do they pull? Is there problems with them? What to check for? What is it worth? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a 2000 with 4 x 18 spring trip, not hydraulic. There are some accumulator parts for the hydraulic reset I think. I've not yet tripped a plow bottom, already had found the big rocks before I went to this plow.

I started out plowing alfalfa in damp soil (okiboji probably, low ground in Niclete Webster Clarion soil structure) with 4 x 18 using my 4020. The hitch (which is very adjustable) was too high and the front of the 4020 unweighted. When the front wheels (plowing in 3rd gear at about 3.5 mph) rose 6' I quit. I took off the front bottom, moved the hitch over and down, added 385 pounds of weights to the front of the 4020 and last year I plowed in 5th gear again at 5.5 mph. I cover more ground in the higher gear and the field often doesn't show any plow marks because it rolls the dirt over so well and crumbles it. At least that's how my plow bottoms do.

AC sold plow bottoms separately from the plow and some are no longer made so they can be hard to maintain that way. Shins for mine were over $35 each from Agco once I found a part number which took calling the old AC engineering office and asking for their plow expert. Its worth identifying the plow bottoms and their replacements before selecting the AC plow.

This year the ground didn't need that much stirring so I hit it once with the field cultivator to work in fertilizer and planted.

I think the only aftermarket A-C plow parts are for the 387 numbered bottoms. If that plow is in the condition you say it"s in, scrap value, no matter what. I"m in New Jersey, and frequent auctions in PA. The only semi-mount plows that seem to bring anything anymore are late-model, high-clearance auto-resets from White (and their Ford clones), CaseIH/IH, and JD.

I see some parts aftermarket for 375 bottoms also.

I out bid a scrap dealer for my plow. The older JD plows next to it left the auction in pieces, I noticed the piles of melted steel from where they were cut up when I went to pick up mine the next day.

In the middle of Iowa, no plows bring much more than scrap metal value.
