We're trying our hand at soybeans this year and are planning on using our old FB-A drill. Can anyone tell me the setting to get around 70 lbs to an acre? To save someone the explanation, I already know about seeds per acre vs. lbs per acre, and our seed works out to 70 lbs/ac. Thanks.

Last week we obtained a 7 x 13 FBA. We need 7 Fertilizer rotary disks to complete it. Got "em, or, have an idea where I can look. Thank you.

Don"t forget to open the little doors in the feedcups up to the last notch for soybeans.

I think I was about mid scale putting 2 bushels of oats. You may want to calibrate closer. What I did at first was this:

I jacked up one drive wheel and I put a paper sack under the seed tube. I put in a mound of seed over that seed meter and turned the wheel (with the lift lowered so the drive was in gear) until I had seed through the meter. Then I emptied the sack and put a chalk mark on the tire. After ten turns of the tire I counted or weighed the seed. I was able to split hairs with the precision of the calibration and also to see that when I was trying to run corn through it that a couple seeds per 100 were getting split. I suspect it might treat soy beans worse than those small flat corn kernels. I calculated seed per acre based on drill spacing and ten times the circumference of the drive wheel. Ten times the circumference of the drive wheel at 7" spacing gave me so many square feet which I divided into 43560 to see how many times to multiply my one row count to get the seed per acre.

I may have to look into that calibration method. Tonight I'm looking at a Deere Vanbrunt seed drill that has always been shedded and the fertilzer section disasembled, washed and oiled.

When I planted corn with the drill, it was easy enough to count the seed. When planting oats and alfalfa, I weighed the small samples using a vintage portable chemists balance and weight set that was readable to the milligram or better. So I didn't need a big sample.

Gerald

I picked up the 17x7 Deere Van Brunt drill tonight. No perforations over even thin spots in the fertilizer compartement. All the rotary disks, plates an hold down tabs are there and free. Grass seeder is on the front. Looks like installing the mechanical lift chains, a couple of down spout hoses, 1/2 a dozen of those chutes under the fertilizer and she's ready to go. Any idea what model it could be or where they hid the serial # plate? $400.00 Canadian peso's.

B&D,if i remember correctly the SN plate is on LH end of seed box.If it has rotary fert. disks it must be an FB or FB-A.$400 pesos sounds cheap for a drill in Texas.Tx Jim

Any way to tell the difference between a FB and a FB-A? Up here most any small or medium sized farmer has been living on a line of credit since the 2003 BSE scare. Price of beef in the stores has stayed the same but the farm price is still below 1985 prices. With the extra profits the packing plants are buying out small operations and merging them into corporate operations. No body small has any money and there is little demand for just a 17 x 7" seed drill on 1000+ acre operations. The Canadian dollar is much better than it's peso status of 63 cents US a few years ago. Something around 85 cents US or so now.

B&D

On the Van Brunt we use to have, when you stood on the footboard, the model # was stamped on the back of the grass seed box, I think on the left end, between the grass and grain boxes.

I must be unable to see the forest for the trees? The grain and fertilizer lids are green, the grass seeders are in front of the grain box and made of galvanized metal. Dual mechanical lift and an individual fertilizer spinner for each row. It's rubber tired but older than a photo of a FB-B I've seen. I can read almost all of the original label/planting rates and even the document's ID number.
