Timing NH Knotters

Folks:

I need some help. I had to take the knotter stack off of my NH 273 to replace the top hay dog springs. I replaced the knotter stack and "timed" the knotter by lining up the timing marks on the knotter clutch when the plunger arm was vertical. However, now the needles won't return to "home" and the needle latch is not activated and the plunger stops. Luckily I did all this by hand so I didn't shear any bolts. :-)

So do any of you have any suggestions? I did not attempt to adjust the needle latch, was out of time for the evening.

I got the knotters timed, I had too much slack in the drive chain when I attempted to time them yesterday.

Re-set the trip pawl prior to timing; pull the needle bail crank arm rearwards to set the knotter firmly against the trip pawl. This sets the knotter in 'home' position. The needle crank arm pivot should be 1/2" behind the imaginary line from the knotter stack shaft center and needle bail link pin. Time the knotter to the plunger from this position. It isn't necessary to remove the knotter stack to change a hay dog spring. Turns a 5 minute job into hours; even if the pin is siezed.
