Curious as to what chemical is effective against Yellow Nutsedge but won't kill the Bahia growing in my pasture. I live in Florida and the predominant pasture grass for horses or cow is Bahia.

We have yellow nutsedge on part of our farms and before roundup beans the only control we found was to use BASF's bassagran. It could be used in corn and soybeans and was a broadleaf control product so it may be safe for use on grasses. If I recall it may take two applications.

I was going to hit upon that. Since this is not a broadleaf, my usual broadleaf treatment of 2-4-D wouldn't whack it..... .or, are you saying that a broadleaf control product will attack it? Have you done it or seen it done?

Thanks,

Mark

hey mark. Yellow nutsedge is neither a broadleaf or a grass. It is in the sedge family. Go figure. Much like the other guys have said the basagran controled the nutsedge and didnt eradicate it and it wasnt a huge problem if it was kept somewhat under control. Since we have used roundup beans it has all but disappeared from our fields. I dont know any thing about Bahia. Is it a tradtional grass? Some sort of legume? Find a chemical dealer in your area and go see if they can help you. Good luck.

Mark, used it (Basagran) for years and years to control nutsedge (yellow and purple) in soybeans in creek bottoms..... ..... .control/suppress, not eradicate. Have a neighbor who has a problem with it in his bermuda grass lawn; he would "borrow" a few ounces each year for control. I assume it's still on the market; probably been 10 or 12 years since I used any.

Here we call it "Nut Grass"". A 12 inch thick concrete slab will not kill it. Not a thing that kills it, that won't kill your good grasses. Like others have said, the best defense is dry soil, but that doesn't kill it but it will not grow. Don't know how many centurys that the tubers will live and still grow.

Hear you on the ..... Don't know how many centurys that the tubers will live and still grow.

One reason I hate to plow a field is just that. Every time you turn the soil, you put another set of weeds in growing position. No telling how many decades the seeds have been lying dormant just waiting for this opportunity.

I"ve been told that good drainage is yellow nutsedge"s worst enemy. It is hard to get rid of without taking out everything else.

You and me both. Tilled up my garden yesterday (cultivated it). 99.9% of what I uprooted was this stuff....in N. Tx.

Seems N.E. Tx. horse folks like Bahia too. Not prevelant up here, but I have one pasture with some coming up. First time I saw any growing. Guess I'll just bale it with the rest of the native grasses.

Now about that weed????? ??
