Hi , I have or want to change all the ledger plates on my 415 . Can anyone explain the easiest way to do this without one of those repair anvils ? Hint-Hint - If anyone has one they don't want anymore ... Anyway could someone explain the best/easiest way to remove 45 year old rivet's and how to set the new ones tight ? Thanks ...Randy

Hi there Randy, I finished replacing the ledger plates on my IH 31 sickle mower. What I did was; Center punched the rivet holding the ledger plate on, drill out the rivet. Then using cold chiesl, drive it between ledger plate and the rock gaurd. Using a bench grinder, size the new plates so they are snug when you whack them down into the gaurds. When you put the new rivets in, stand a punch upside down in your vise, holding rock guard upside down, rest it on top of the punch, round over the rivet, and your done. I did five at a time, drilled out old rivet, whacked plate off, size new plates, add new rivets, then do next set of 5 guards. Seemed to work faster for me. I had to drill out the rivet holes a little wider in my rock gaurd, you may not have to. It takes time, but it is worth it. Any questions, my email is open. Rich

Hey, Thanks for the tips . When you say you sized them what do you mean ? Mine have a half moon boss next to the throat and the ledgers already come shaped that way . My other problem is the agco dealer NOR sickle service can get me any #6 rivets so all of this may be moot . Agco can get the ledgers but no rivets ! My guards are original and I have a strong feeling to keep them and the machine original . Maybe some collector might want it sometime to play with at shows but for now it has to pull it own weight around here and make some hay this summer . Thanks again . By the way , Where are you located . I'm in Butler Co. ...Randy

are you refering to the ledger plates on the rock guards? if so i just buy replacement guards. i use the JD universal #700, available at any farm supply store for about $5 each. the big plate below the head i just use section bolts and nuts, so much easier than rivets.

Caseyc ! Hi , Glad to hear from you ! You know I tried to get those generic #700 guards from the farm store , the green ones , but the mounting bolt hole was to close to the throat . I couldn't get it to bolt up without having the bolt cocked in the hole . As for the big ledger plate below the head in the front and the wear plate in the back where do get them ? Also the outer shoe ledger plate ? The agco dealer doesn't think he can get them and sickle service said they might be able to but I don't know yet . So do you have a good source ? How do you use bolts in the wear ledger under the head ? Wouldn't they have to be countersunk flush with the top of the plate ? Thanks ...Randy
