A person at work offered me a hesont 5400 round baler for $800. He said the chamber is ground driven? What got me interested was it only needs one single hydrolck line to open the chamber. Any segestions? I'm not sure I should buy a ground driven baler.

Bob,

That's $800 more than its worth. We had a neighbor that had one of those contraptions. Not only do they roll the hay the ground(picking up everything else in addition to hay), they also make a bale so loose that its more like a haystack than a round bale. You could buy an older 605F series Vermeer baler for a little more money and then you'd really have a baler.

Don't walk away, run. There were only a handfull built because they didn't make a quality bale and sales suffered. Plenty of good cheap balers out there that will make a good bale. Electric tie means you only need one hydraulic circuit to open the tail gate.

My two cents.

John

I agree on the run. I am selling a 5580 which is an elect tie, one hyd ckt, pto driven, 5x6, of vintage years. Many times I would have to vary the chamber speed vs ground speed to get the bales to start or attempt to clear a jam.

Run fast too. Grin

BIL had one years ago. It worked, but did not make tight bales. Big disadvntage was that you have to dump the bale when finished and could not transport the bale in the baler any distance.

If I have been told right what it does is the hay itself rolls on the ground. I have seen one and this is what the guys selling it told me. If I remember right the price was three hundred dollars about four years ago. I would like to see one work. I am inclined to think the more simple things work the better they are but have a hard time seeing how it started a wad of hay rolling and that it would get a bale very tight.
