Adjusting sicklebar hold down clips

My little David Bradley sicklebar needs the holddown clips adjusted so there's less play on the bar. I tried wacking them with a hammer to tighten them up, but some pretty good wacks didn't do anything. I don't want to bend them out of shape as I'm not sure I can get replacements--is there a secret on how to do this?

thanks!
Tom A

Agree with Leroy. Manual will describe procedure as he did.

Place a suport under the bar at each hold down, without this the bar has enough bounce that all you are doing is bouncing the bar and not bending the hold downs and unless it is the cast holddown then they cannot be adjusted that way but from most any mower should work

May have to remove from the mower to whack correctly, and it will take trial and error time, but it works. Lay them down on a concrete floor to whack.

Bkeepr,

I agree with txgrn 100%. I have an old Ford 501 sickle bar mower and the only thing that I have found that works is to remove the clip, clamp it into a vise, tap it a little bit, and then put it back on and see how it looks. You might have to remove it and tap it again one direction or the other, but you'll get it just right by doing this.

Good luck,

Tom in TN
