I bought a 501 mower last weekend and I have been studying the owners manual and have come to the following conclusions. Any feed back is greatly appreciated.
1. The 501 has attachments and clamps to allow it to be hooked up to many different models of tractors.
2. Not all of the push rods, stabilizers and struts are required on EVERY tractor.
3. On my N-series tractor I need to remove the PTO shaft before raising the cutting bar. After removing the PTO shaft I can use my 3-point lift to raise the mower frame for transport.
4. I can hook my 501 to the 3-point setup and totally eliminate hooking up the push rods, stabilizers and clamps IF I use anti sway bars on my lift arms.
5. In order for this mower to work right I need to set it up properly as outlined in the manual.
6. Last and not least, anyone who has tried to use this mower without setting it up correctly thinks the mower is a piece of junk and will sell it to you real cheap!

Regarding #3: Do you mean the mower driveshaft must be disconnected from the tractor pto before lifting the cutting bar up to the (vertical) transport position? If so, why? I'm not familiar with that mower. I use a JD #9 sickle and I can put the bar in transport position with the driveshaft connected.

Whether or not the driveshaft is connected, be very careful when picking that cutter bar up. Keep your fingers and thumbs OUT of the rock guards. That blade can slip and cut off a finger real quick.

I think this Zane fella on the "N" board has a conversion kit so you won't have to disconnect the PTO. Pricey but not if you are going to be using that mower a lot. Take a look at his website and check it out. Someone on the N board can give you the link.

I've got a model 515, the next-newer one, that I use on an 8N.

I like my 515, but like you I got the manual and studied it and have spent a couple of years getting used to it and fine-tuning.

I've seen lots of these go very cheap for exactly your lesson #6!

good luck,
Tom A
