Hello All,

I've got a 1940 Farmall M, and am looking for a way to mow. We're probably looking at 5 or so acres of grass, and I don't want to mow it very often. I am figuring there is a rotary mower that I can tow behind the M, and power it off of the PTO, I just need to know what it's called (so I can start looking for an old one). The rotary mowers I've looked at up close need a 3-point hitch and you can adjust the height (and maybe the hitch carries all the weight of the mower). Any advice, or key-words I can look for in the sale adds?

As I said, I don't plan to use it a whole lot. The place was overgrazed about 2 years ago, and left idle last summer. A friend (I don't have any need for the hay) tried to hay it off last fall, but it was too thick for his (sickle bar) to cut. He uses his rig to hay lots of ditches and stuff, and seemed suprised that he couldn't cut it. The guy I bought the place never mowed, he had horses and grazed it off. I'd like to cut everything now (April, Eastern South Dakota) to give the grass a head start over the weeds. I might cut it once a year or so in the future, let somebody hay it, or let another friend put some steers on it. I'm guessing what I want is a rotary? (since I don't plan on picking up the grass when I'm done).

thanks,

Bob 4knee

Does your tractor have hydraulics? If it does there are several out there. John Deere made their 609-709 mowers in pull type and 3pt.

Hydraulic cylinder needed to raise mower.

As other post said, don't skimp the overrun clutch-just not safe.

a pull type rotary cutter is what you are looking for they are out there be sure to put an overrunning clutch on that M. should handle a 6 or 7 footer if just cutting grass
