I bought the 410 I was aking about the other day. I will find out how big a piece of junk some of you said it was, I guess. I know it want be near perfect, but for $1650, I dont expect it to bale with a newer baler at all. Like I said I am not baling very many bales at all. If any one has anything good or bad advice I would appreciate it.

I used to bale with a 510, which I sold because I didn't like how loose the bales were - it only had 2 springs for pressure. I never had trouble baling as long as I followed a couple of rules :

1. Only bale when the hay is absolutely dry. If it is tough, or if you are baling later in the evening, hay will wrap around the inlet rolls and you will have a horrible mess. I only did this once before I learned.

2. When you are starting a bale, watch your belts carefully and make sure you direct hay evenly across the bale, If you see a belt which is "wandering" too much, immediately get hay coming in to that belt.

Good Luck !

I friend of mine bought a 410 baler a few years back. It looked like new, had always been shedded, etc. That thing would not bale hay, period. He then bought the manuals for it from JD, went through that whole machine with a fine tooth comb, set everything to factory specs., made sure all belts were of exact correct length, set tractor pto speed at exact recomendation, and by god it bales hay. It took some getting used to, but he now bales like crazy with it. I once helped him rake a field, and he rolled 125 bales in an afternoon with it. So , I guess they can be made to work. Would I want one? No., but I suppose it beats no baler at all.

Paul,
Luke S knows from first hand experience the JD410 will test the best operators. If you look at John Deere's hay tools they have always been years behind New Holland, Hesston and Vermeer and even for a while Gehl. When the JD 410 bale was manufactured. Hesston, Vermeer, New Holland, Vicon, Gehl, Krone, & Deutz had round baler that were open throat. The JD410 bale is closed throat and 10 years behind the Vermeer 605C closed throat baler. No for you green blood worshipers, John Deere's current round bale is very good but also realize, JD had to pay Hesston a boat load of cash for patent licensing and patent infringements, Green Hesstons!

Yea, the closed throat design is much more fussy, you need to adapt to it, not the other way around. :) I understand starting bales can be a challenge, and moisture content is critical.

I got an old Hesston 5500, and it is old and simple, but it bales like hell. A guy I bale with has a 530 JD and it makes a little tighter bale than mine but it'll keep right up with that Deere all day, and cost a lot less. I don't know a lot about the deere's, but his 530 is a lot fussier than my Hesston. He always has to mess with it about 10 minutes out of every hour of baling, the Hesston just keeps on plugin away.

I have an old Vermeer 605F myself. The old gals can eat a lot of hay for what they cost. :)
