Which plate do I need to plant sweetcorn using an IH 185 so that the seed spacing is about 7" apart?

Not singling you out, but I have seen several of these question lately and think what you should be askin is "where can I get a plate chart" Then go down to the seed store and find out what seed they have. Look in your trusty chart, find a couple, three or four sizes (as in range) for the seed they have. (ie.. small, med large - rounds, flats, etc.) Then hop on ebay and find one of the fella's that have about a bazzilon plates for sale and see if you can find the numbers you want.

As for spacing I'd bet that is done with ground speed and drive gears. But I have been known to be wrong.

Errin the fella who is bound and determind to plant corn with an old oliver 540 and only has two sizes of plates for med flats.

BTW my plate chart came in the operators manual.

I am not asking "Where is a plate chart". I am asking which plate do I need to plant sweetcorn that will produce spacing of the seed approximately 7 inches apart using and IH 185 planter. As soon as someone with enough knowledge can tell me the answer and not were to go I will be able to purchase the needed plate from Ebay without having to purchase a Bazillion of them to trial them out. Since the sweetcorn I am planting is medium and primarily more of a flat than a round this information may help someone who has never seen a seed of sweetcorn. I appreciate your effort of redirection but hopefully someone with a plate chart can assist me in my quest for my answer.

I am not sure what ground speed has to do with spacing unless the unit is PTO driven but the unit I have has a single rear wheel and an enclosed drive chain and no way easy way to change drive gears.

BTW - the planter that I drug out of the weeds did not have a manual.

Weldon is correct. What you have is what was known as a "Seedsman Special" You could have a different seed spacing on every row, with different sprockets used from one row to the next with the same plate in each row. The plate cells are measured in 1/64ths of an inch., and that determines how the seeds feed through the plate. You don't want to small of cells or the seed will jam plugging the cells, or if the cells are too large you would have a lot of "double" or "triple" seed drops. The sprocket combinations determine the seed spacing. I have worked for a seed corn company testing plantability for plate planters for 24 years plus farming for more than that although haven't planted with a plate planter for about 15 years.

I understand that you only want a recommendation for a seed plate, but you need to understand this first. Two things determine the seed drop spacing of a 185 planter: the number of seed cells (seed holes - 8,16 or 24 for instance) in the seed plate and the various combinations of the different sized gears ( four available to select from ) used in the drive chain housing , one on the drive wheel shaft and the other on the drive shaft turning the plate beneath the seed hopper.It is simple to change the drive gears. I used 185 units for many years and changed the gears many times. You really do need to look at some pages from an operator's manual before attempting to plant. In addition ,Lustran seed plates are available from the manufacturer, Lincoln Ag Products ( lincolnagproducts.com ). I ordered a set of four last week . 10.75 each , plus shipping.
