New Idea spreader paint

I have a very rusty new idea spreader and need to shorten the chain as it hangs 8" below the box.
Do I need to take out links or is there an adjust
ment of some sort. I have just purchased this
and would like to paint but all the rust.....Can
I paint over the rust and hope it dosen"t peel
and what is a good paint type for this application. Also it is ground driven and I intend
on using it if I can get the tires off to replace
them. The wood is good .... 1+

Before putting on the finish paint, I would use a rust converter or inhibitor--something to keep it from coming up through the paint. Even if you use a good primer the rust can still get through (also make sure any loose scale and rust is removed). Hope this helps.
