What to look for in a sickle bar mower?

I am wanting to get one to cut some brush (gallberry). I think with the first pass I could cut the brush down, push it in a pile and burn. From there it could be a relatively easy to maintain with rotary mower and Remedy. To late in the yr. to burn it off per State Forestry reps.

If someone has a better way I open for suggestions.

IH 1300 9' sickle mower is the best I've ever used. Much better than models with the wood pitman arm. They were also produced lately (last 10 years) under the "New Idea" brand. They are better than any modern Deere or New Holland unit made. I've run and worked on them a bunch. Can be run easily with a 40 hp tractor and once you become good at running one, they will cut with any type mower out there.

Yes I agree pitmanless high speed mowers are the best choice though if you get one with a pitman drive it is a good idea to get one that you can find new pitman sticks for without much trouble like the Deere #5 and other models I see sticks listed for IH also in most places that sell them. I think you would like a sickle mower if you get one they are nice for alot of applications. Another thing that I preffer in one is hyd lift for the bar. 3 point ones would be nice also. Mine Deere #5 has a 7 ft bar though I would like a machine with 9 ft better.

IF you go with a sickle bar try to find a pittmanless one like a Massey Dynabalance or an IH 1300(?) or a Deere 350.That way you won't have to worry about breaking pitman woods.Better still ,if you could find an old MC Rotary scythe, then it would chop up the wood pretty well.

What kind of terrain do you have to work with? Is it to where you could run an old cutditioner on it? We've mowed down some pretty good scrub brush, thorns-etc, with our NI 272. Didn't make for much cleanup.
