I've got a JD #5 Sickle with a big oil leak at the front seal of gear box. Question is how does the fly wheel come off to get to the seal. The only thing I see is a 1/4" bolt or pin half way on the fly wheel itself and 1/2 on the shaft. If this is a bolt is it left hand thread or right and if frozen what is best way to remove? If threaded I can not see where cutting off the head will be an advantage in pulling the fly wheel off. HELP!!!!! !!!!! !!!!!

The flywheel is held on by a tapered key. Someone may have ground off a bolt and put in there instead. To get the flywheel off you have to use a large puller or tap on the back of it, after it moves foreward a bit, drive it back and then you may be able to get the key out. Once you get the key out the flywheel will come off. This is they theory anyway, sort of depends upon how someone fixed it before. The sprocket on the back end screws onto the shaft. If you can"t get the flywheel off i the way mentioned you may be able to unscrew the rear sprocket and take the whole thing out the front, then press the shaft out.

If you do a search of this forum on the subject there were some good posts on this about a year ago (maybe two). Never done it but remember the posts.
