Another sicklebar question - which to buy

I need to buy a sicklebar mostly for roadside cutting. Would prefer a belly-mount but can't use one with my front-end loader attached. So I need a 3-point unit. Searched the archives but didn't find a discussion with recommendations.

Was told by a local dealer that the worst thing to do was get one that is hard to find parts for. So ... which models are easy to find parts? OR better yet, which ones don't break down and stand up to abuse (I'm not always that careful :>(

Thanks,
KEG

I am with Animal on this one. If you can find an IH balanced head mower they work excellent. IH sold them to New Idea, who made them for both companies. The same basic mower is now made by Rowse. Parts are easy to get from Case-IH or Agco dealerships. The mower can cut at virtually any angle with no pitman arm to break. Some people are leary of the wobble box, but there is a guy in Aberdeen SD that will repair them well, quickly and at a reasonalbe cost. Most came with 9' bars. 3 Point and trailer models. I bought parts from Rowse so I can lift the bar to transport using a standard 3X8 cylinder, but I have not put the parts on to try it yet. Hope this helps

John

KEG, I've used a JD #5 for a couple of years now.
Great reliable mower. The only parts I have needed so far is a new pitman arm and I got new guard plates from Deere. I also picked up a new cycle from TSC for it. Parts are available.
For ditches you might want to locate a mower with a belt drive instead of a pitman arm.

Good Luck and don't lose any fingers picking up the bar.

Good point about those fingers picking up the bar. Seems like a dumb thing to say until you need to pick up the bar. Your hand naturaly wants to grab on a rock gaurd. Clipped my work glove last summer.... Got to think before you lift.
Man did I cuss my self out all the way back to the shop for a new glove.

It can't be overstated, everyone please be careful when lifting the sickle bar or working on mower. Always lift bar with hands flat, fingers staying out of sickle. Always keep fingers out of sickle even after bar has been raised, it can slip down and cut. Also watch when working on mower if someone else is around that they don't accidentally turn a pulley, PTO, etc. and pose risk of finger cutting to another person. We have a JD #37, and it's always treated with respect.

Makes no difference what model what brand, etc...they are all dangerous. You need and want of all your fingers!

I have a John Deere #9 sickle mower. It is a fully mounted 3 point mower. I use it on my Ford 850 tractor. My aunt used to use it with her 8N Ford before she gave the mower to me. So far I've been able to buy parts at the JD dealer. It is a pitman style mower so it will only mow with the bar horizontal. I've done a little roadside mowing with it, but mostly I use it to cut small parcels of hay in the summer. When everything's in adjustment and the blades are sharp, it works really nice.

I've seen #9's sell for around $150 in complete condition. It's the only mower I've ever used so I can't comment on other makes/models.

Hi , I'm going to agree with the suggestion that you get one you can get parts for easily . With that thought but no experience with sickles other than the two I bought that I can't get part's for I would say that John Deere or New Holland would be your best bet's . Good Luck and Take care ...Randy
