Using grain bin for hay storage

I have a 3500 bushel grain bin with a perforated raised floor that I'm considering using for storing square bales. Has anyone done this before or know of any reason why one shouldn't? It's not being used for anything else and I would like to make use of it. Also, I seen on a couple of occaisions where someone had put overhead garage doors on grain bins. Anyone know who might do that in the Missouri area?

I have put bales in an old round wire corn crib before. You will lose a lot of space to the curves. If you get 500 bales in there it would surprise me.

I have 9-1000 bu. bins. We put grass hay & alfia in the bins, No problems. took the door of one , horses use it in real bad weather. grampa Lee

Use wood pallets on the floor and keep it off the walls. I see no reason it be a problem. Just don't plan on "stuffin" it full wall to wall and remember to close the hatch up top.

Now, that might work out fine. And keep a top vent (not door, but protected vent) clear so that air can move & moisture can get out.

I'd not want to be the guy packing hay inside a bin tho, oof! :)

I'm near Sedalia. We have two 3500 bushel bins and a smaller bin which I believe is called a bulk storage bin. We haven't considered selling the two large bins and are using one to store some lumber. However, I would like to get rid of the legs, augers, tower, etc. as I have no need for them and the support cables are always in the way. Might consider getting rid of the smaller bin too since it doesn't have a side door.

It should work. There would be a lot of work involved getting it in and out, but the fact that it has a perforated floor would allow you to blow air through it to get rid of any heat and condensation. A problem would be it would only hold about 800 to 1000 bales the way I figured it. A bushel=1.25 square feet and a square bale would be in the 3.5 to 4.0 square foot range. Plus you would loose some due the bin being round and the bales being square. A few years back I remember seeing a grain bin type hay dryer at one of the farm shows. They must not have been sucessful since I have not seen one in use. The overhead garage would take up some space unless it was a roll up type. I once considered useing a smaller grain bin for parts, oil, and etc storage. A bulldozer got that one before I got back to check on it.

Couple holes in the wooden barn mow floor, dad put a sheet or 2 of tin over them. Hay always molds on them (not perfed tho) and the tin does not do well either from this.

I would proceed with caution. Not really a good or helpful answer, sorry.

I remember when some farmers got caught in the 80s, after putting the bin of corn into the USDA CCC storage, and when it got time to move the grain into govt storage, it was found that they had sold most of the grain at harvest, NEARLY filled the bin with bales, then corn, taken a loan on it- and could not deliver the required amount. Seemed to be their last year of farming, too.
