I am plowing sod, breaking old hay meadow and I have been chieseling then disking and that first pass with the disk is rough because the sod just throws up in clumps. I got to thinking today what if I run the disk first to cut the grass roots and then chiesel would it not be as rough and then I could chiesel it both ways. Has anybody tried this? Thanks

I'll tell you what works but you will think I'm nuts. Take the chisel and run over it but maybe not as deep as you normally would. Then get on it with a disc pretty soon after that and knock it down the best you can. Now, moldboard it. It will work! The chisel breaks up the sod and then the disc lays it all down so the moldboard plow can bury it and give you a chance at a decent seedbed. It sounds like it would take alot of time but we all know what it takes to beat down a bunch of sod if you dont get it turned under.

I see a couple porblems with this:
1st: Why waste all that fuel, when just useing moldboard will turn it over w/ out all the extra hassel.
2nd: if the top 2-4" is loose, then you come across with a plow, you're going to have major traction issues unless you're hanging A LOT of weights on it, loaded tires + wheel weights.
3rd: The moldboard plow works best to bury stuff when the dirt being cut is packed together, not loose and falling away before the whole furrow is tipped over. Then it tends to just push dirt instead of rolling it.

I've only ever used Oliver plows, and they work excellent for every thing I've tried to do with them. The one I bought last year has a harrow mounted on the side and it does a great job of busting the chunks and laying it out smooth again. It saves atleast 1 pass with the springtooth.

Spring plowing sucks no matter what ! Just moldboard plowed 13 acres of an older stand of alfalfa/orchard grass. In the last week I also went over it with a 235 JD disc ..... drug it.... disc again and also drug again.... the clods of sod didn't diminish by anything noticable to the human eye after each pass..... luckily fuel prices are so low ! ha ha Fall moldboard plowing is the best.... but since I am sure you are in the same situation I am in with the clods.....I was thinking next time I will disc twice if it has to be done in the spring. A guy near here 2 yrs ago took an early first cutting alfalfa crop.... then no tilled corn in with a regular fairly new JD planter..... .. had awesome looking silage corn that fall ! Every year and everyones land isn't the same though so I am just putting in my 2 cents. Feels like fall by the way up here in Western/SW Minn ! A lot are done with corn planting already here and the crazies even have some beans in the ground !! Have a safe planting season !

Last year I used a chisel on some sod, and you have to go over it twice. Second time at an angle from the first time. In the picture I'm making the second pass. I used a cultivator and a disk a few times each to work it after, but it was too dry and was just plain-ol rough. I would have plowed, but we only had our 3-16 at the time and it would have taken forever to cover that ground, and we needed it NOW!! I mold board plowed it in the fall after getting some sudan off it. This year it's goin in corn.

I agree that plowing is the best...however if you want kill it with Roundup or Gramoxone first, then wait a couple weeks. you'll kill a lot more weeds and the sod will bust up a lot better after it's dead and you might be able to make less trips trying to kill the old grass

just did a 3 acre peice of 20+ year sod. I moldboard plowed about 6.5". Had to disc in same direction to level down a bit after 1 week. 4 days later I disc at an angle and then normal dir again. It looks great. Just have to decide what I am gonna do for weed control now, spray of till?

i ususlly disk first to breakup the sod. then chisel to rip the soil and then redisk to smooth it out. this is just for garden ground, not large field renovation.

If you are breaking sod you really should be using a moldboard plow. The moldboard plow will turn the sod completely over, burying the grass and hay. Let the field lay like that for about a week, and then disk, you should end up with nice, mellow, soil, just right for a new seedbed.

Gee Whiz Rusty,

I thought the no-til crowd said we was just 'sposed to go in there and plant. Are ya tryin' to say that this won't work for sod either?

Hurmph, I gotta start payin' closer attention, I guess. :>)

Allan, around here, the no-till boys wouldn't even bother with disking first, let alone chiseling. Nope, just pull in with the planter and git-er-done.

Willy, Being an ol stocker cattle, corn farmer I tend to favor the chiesel then disk method.
Try chieseling in throughs. on the first time across the field. Then on the second trip angle back with the chiesel again. Always changing the angle and direction on each trip.
Then when you start disking you have the depth you want, then the trash will disapear fairly quickly.
I tend to favor heivier-primary type disk over the lighter finishing type disk.
If when you start back across a field on the 2nd & 3rd and so on trips andthe ground is too rough then make the angle less drastic.

See the 2nd trip is a less severe angle to the 1st trip. Hope this helps.
Later,
John A,

Around here we wouldn't get enough sod ripped up in one pass of the chisel. With sod we'd make two passes and then disk or field cultivate. With four inch shovels on 12 inch spacing, one pass is ripping only 30% of the field. That's fine on corn/soy/small grain ground, but not sod.

If the chisel has coulters then no but if not diskl 1st to tear sod into fist sized chunks.
