What's the difference, and if there is one, can one type be used for what the other was designed for as well as for its own purpose?

Rock rakes usually refer to a pto powered implement not a ground engaging one.York is actually a manufacturer (like ski-doo, kleenex etc.) A couple of companies that manufacture rock rakes are Harley(Glenmac), ATI (Preseeder) Woods(skid steer mounted only). There are numerous ag models degelman, highline, rockomatic etc. which are larger units. The landscaper versions are 10 to 20 times more expensive then a landscape rake as you can imagine. Just my $ 0.02.

Not to argue with you, it's probably just a regional terminology thing, but I always called the units you're describing a "rock picker" versus a "rock rake".

Either way, doesn't really matter.

Actually a rock picker has a rotating reel that moves the rocks into a hopper that can then be dumped. A rock rake merely windrows the rocks. Hope this explains the difference.

There are many types of things here. :)

I guess a rock rake to me is built like a small-diameter, heave-duty side rake (for hay), and puts rocks in a windrow for a rock picker to remove.

A rock picker has a scoop like a manure bucket of tines, sometimes a very heavy reel to pull the rocks in, sometimes just hydraulics to lift the bucket & dump the rocks into a box in back. When full, the box will dump to rocks out onto a pile, or if you spent enough money, up higher so you can dump onto a truck or wagon.

A landscape rake is built like a super-strength garden rake & looks like a 3-point blade, but the blade is made of teeth. I think this is what York makes?

First time I seen your site and didnt really see the full question but for what its worth I have a landscape co. that used a york rake and then I would go over the lawn with a side delivery hay rake to get the fine stones. Three years ago we bought a land pride rock rake p.t.o. driven which basicaly has a bottom roller with flat bars welded in a spiral. My Co. now installs 3 lawns a day compared to taking 2-3 days to put in one lawn

Same thing, as far as I know. York Rake, Rock Rake and Landscaping Rake are all the same.
