Touch control lever.

Here is another rookie question so please bare with me. I have a 8n with a shredder (brush hog?) and i'm having problems with the front end of it digging into the ground while cutting grass. I tried to level it using the advice of a kind gentleman here on the forums but I am not having much success. I'm sure this is a dumb question but should I be using the touch control lever to lift the front of the shredder while cutting? Is that what the lever is for, to adjust ride height? The back wheel of the cutter is set to give about 6 inches of clearance on the back of the cutter but the front of it is sitting on the ground and the front corners are what is plowing up the grass.

Thanks for the Help. God Bless

Carlos,

You definitely should set the three point hitch control (touch control lever?) to set the height of the front of the bush hog. I try to set mine so the the bush hog is approximately level, set the stop on the three point hitch control so that the lever stops at that point when pushed down, and the go to it.

I've heard that the bush hog should actually be lower in the front than in the back. I've also heard that it should be higher in the front than in the back, so maybe someone will straighten us out on that issue.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

Thanks Tom for the info. I'm more than sure that has been my problem the whole time, I never used the hitch control to set the height of the cutter, I just assumed that the only time to use that was when you needed to lift it to clear something. I can see the light now and it makes sense. I read the same thing about the cutter being higher in front or lower, I read that if you are going to cut heavy brush you want the front a little higher that way the front of the cutter does not smash the brush down before it can cut it, I guess its kinda like using your push mower on high weeds, you lift the front of the mower to kinda chop the big stuff down, then I read if you are only going to cut grass with the cutter you get a better cut with the front tilted down a little.

Again Thanks for the help. God Bless.

Since the N series does not have live hydraulics, can be a little 'fussy' to use the lever to control the 3pt height - likes to leak down.

There are limiter chains that will help you out a lot, farm supply stores or most farm/ lawn dealerships of any color sell them. They pin onto the top link of the tractor (might need a longer pin for there) and clip onto the front bottom edge of the bush hog, limiting how low the front lip can go.

If the front of your mower is too low,
let the top link out to raise it some.
You can also use limit chains so it won't drop past where you want it.
The front should be about an inch lower than the back.

I was going to suggest that as well, but: Many bush hogs have flex-links built into the top link so they can float over rough ground. Won't work for him then.
