Gehl Bros. 6' Pull Type Bushhog... No-Really!

I have just bought and am in the process of bringing home a Gehl Bros. Pull Type Bushhog that is at least 6' wide. The problem is, the gearbox has broken open at the base of its mount to the deck and is completely loose. The previous owner tried to contact the nearest Gehl dealership (somewhere in Eastern IN) and they basically told him he was mistaken-that Gehl never made any bushhogs, but I have the proof. Any ideas how to make the 'ol hog run again? I am going to run it by the local welding shop to see if they can help it, but I don't have very high expectations.

If you can get a few #'s off the gear box and a name, a good bone yard should be able to find the same gear box on another machine (could even be a manure spreader). A name that pops into my head is Durst(or something like that), and they are still making new gear boxes as far as I know.

You might consider replacing the gearbox with one from another brand. If it has different mounting holes you can weld a quarter inch plate with matching holes to the deck and make it work. If the bottom of the gear box is broken you're going to have to do some machine work to get the gear centerlines into the right relationship after it's welded and if you don't get it right you're going to wear out bearings and seals (and the bevel gears themselves)prematurely. Just a thought.

The father in law had one and the gearbox broke and finding a replacement is impossible, so he just bought a bush hog instead.

The Gehl dealer was right. Gehl didn't make Bush Hogs. Gehl(and many others) made/make rotary cutters. Bush Hog made Bush Hogs.

The daelership I worked at sold Gehl and Brillion. The Gehl rotary cutters (brush hogs) were made by Brillion for Gehl. The bad thing is that Brillion quit making them in the late 60"s. You may be able to get some high volume parts still like blades, but a gearbox is going to be a LONG search.

Thanks (I think) for the info, Ian. Hopefully, the gearbox can be resurrected by a Nickel rod.
