Can an old corn planter (plate style planter) be used to plant pumpkins, what style plates would be needed and what spacing would you plant.

What kind of planter do you have? If you can get blank seed plates, all you have to do is drill or mill the slot size you need. Remember though, it's 3 seeds every 3 foot.

Greg I read your post the other night and no one responded. I am no expert but I'll throw you an opinion. I have an I-H 56 4 row planter. This is what I see. Your seed plates would have to be big enough to carry a pumpkin seed in the plate and although I have several sets of plates I would have to modify the plate to accomodate that size of seed. Secondly you would have a spacing problem When I plant pumpkins by hand I plant them about 3 feet apart, thus you would have to block off some of the slots in the plate to get a spacing somewhere near that. I would guess that there are plates for pumpkins, but I have never run across them. Commercial growers must have access to them. Perhaps the manufacturer of your planter produces plates, maybe you need to make your own. Plastic plates can be filed for bigger seed holes and a bondo product can seal off some holes for better spacing...by the time you figure all that out you could plant a lot of pumpkins by hand.....Best of luck.. I took a pair of my John Deere seed plates that would accommadate the pumpkin seeds, welded every slot except one ( did 2 plates ). I get a plant every 3 foot and have a six gap between rows.
