Bought a 720 std, would like to plow with it, but it has 18.4 x 30 tires and a non-adjustable wide front end....I dont think the rear tire would fit in the furrow...if it did, the front might not fit either....
Is is possible to plow with this tractor?
I dont have a plow yet...so wondering if this is possible?

But I only wnat a 3 bottom..will this work??? in reply to David McDan, 04-19-2005 08:04:50

I want a 3-14 or 3-16 trailer type or 3 point type plow - not a 4 bottom...will this work or do I need a 4-14 to get the rear tires in the furrow?

You can use a three bottom. The correct line of draft will be closer to the inside of the wheels than if it were a four bottom, but the plow is small enough relative to the tractor weight and power that it will make little if any difference. Go for it!

On my std. 70D I have the fronts dished out and have the fronts in the middle of the rears when looking at it head on. I pull 3-14 trailer and works just fine. Only thing depends on how deep you plow and the front axle clearance.

Compare a Firestone All Traction Field & Road with a Firestone Traction Field & Road of the same size. The All traction is both taller & wider. The tread is full width right out square with the sidewall. The T.F & R tire has a much narrower tread and a sidewall that curves inward to meet the tread bars. Makes a difference fitting a furrow. Dad ploughed from 1955 to 1972 with a 70D standard with 15-30/18.4x30 rear tires. No bother pulling a 4-14 trail type JD plough. Even had the manual swinging drawbar for side hills. The drawbar could be swung right from the drivers sear while driving.

According to my 730 Op manual, you should get a 68" tread with center to center with the wheels dished out. That should get you somewhere near 30" from the tractor centerline to the inside of the front tires. With the rears set at the same 30" to the inside of the tires from centerline, you can get close to the center of draft of a 4 bottom 14" plow (26" plus or minus) which a decent 720 should walk along well in soils I am familiar with. If you think you can pull 4-16's, the line of draft will be just about perfect. Absolutely no need to try setting up an onland hitch; the line of draft won't work for any size plow you should consider.

I have a JD 830 with 18.4-34 tires pulling a JD model 555 4-14 plow and running it in the furrow with no problem. On the standard tractors move the drawbar to the left approx one hole and do not worry about adjusting tire width. This outfit is a lot of fun to plow with. The only problem is at club plow days it always seems like you are following someone who is only plowing about 3 inches deep and this causes some problems. As for onland hitch I have a 5-16 and don't like it nearly as well as the 555 in the furrow. The JD plow manual covers the standard tractors.

Rear tires won't be a problem; pulled 14 inch (bottoms) plows with everything from 13.6s to 20.8s with no problem; front-end may keep you out of the furrow, depending on plow..... ...

You need an on land plow. With it you keep the tractor tires out of the furrow.

I didn't read closely enough. I though there were WIDE tires. 18.4 fit in my plow furrows just fine with a 3x 18 behind my 4020.
