I recently purchased a Howard tiller HR-30. Dont have an owners manual yet and need to adjust chain and select a set of gears for tine speed. Any one out there that can tell me the correct deflection on chain and or provide a table to select tiller gears?

HR30 is an Excelent tiller!!!

I like to ajust the chain just so it isn't tight!!! I want some defection, but no slop.

I believe this is why the chain drive takes rocks so well, the chain can give a little and absorb some of the shock loads! I much prefer a chain to gears in this size tiller!!

As for the tine speed, that depends on several things!!!! Ground speed?, rear door open or closed?, how much hp does your tractor have?, and the most important of all, is what your tilling and what you want your field to look like when you get done!

Thanks for the reply. I dont even know where to start with the tine speed. The table on the tiller itself is worn off and I dont yet have a manual. I figure I can kind of trial and error it but if you have access to the table and would be willing to email it I will leave my adress open. Thanks again, I was struck by your enthusiasm for this tiller. I feel lucky to have found one.

I also have an HR30 80", for a field that's been worked every year and i want decent tillage, i set the tine speed second UP from lowest. I leave the back door closed, and use 540 RPM. I then ajust my ground speed from 2-1/2 to 5 mph. I till as deep as it will go. That's a good all around starting point.

For heavy vegetation, i'd rather make a second pass after it dies than go slow and grind the soil into powder!!!! This is where many of the guys here miss the boat on rotavateing!!

Sorry, i'm a bit too busy to look for my manual right now.... Call these guys and order one, they were cheap last time i bought one. 231-924-3420
