I know it is an old planter but I don't plant that much corn and it works. My qeustion is about the monitor. how do I know the thing is working before I start planting. Should you be able to see any light going throught the sensors. Right now, when I plug it in all the lights come on and the buzzer goes off.

any advice or info. would be appreciated

The one we had had a moniter that was labeled Dickey John. 4 lights for the rows, 1 for power, switch, and a buzzer.

Turn the switch on and it goes throught the self test. Buzzer goes off after a while. To test before we went to the field we would drop something down each seed tube. Seed or corn work the best. All you need to do is interupt the light. When you do this the buzzer will go off.

One caution don't use pebbles. AG advisor did this once. Used one a little to large and then tried to force it through. Crunch and wrecked a $75 senser.

At the time the 1240 was made, my understanding is that all John Deere monitors were made by Dickey-John. The one we had turned on all the lights and sounded the buzzer as a self-test when it was turned on. Also, going slow or turning would set it off. As soon as you get up to planting speed the buzzer should shut off and the lights should start flasing showing seeds dropping thru. I believe the population dial was used to adjust the sensitivity of the photo eyes in the drop tubes. Never had any trouble with it picking up on anything else. (Shouldn't be anything in a seed tube but seed!) Have to watch for innoculant or graphite getting on the lens though. Dealer used to sell a soft, long handled brush that we used to clean the lens as needed. Jim.
