Baler Painting Questions

Well, I finally got a set of implement tires to fit my old JD 14T (ribbed implement from Miller tire - thanks to those who recommended them) and I have dressed-up and painted my rims. Now I am ready to start painting the baler and I have a few questions.

1. How do you folks get to the nooks and crannies when you are painting your old baers - like behind the flywheel, etc.

2. Are you spraying (w/cans or air gun) or brushing?

3. Are you priming everything?

4. How do you deal with the logo lettering? Just paint over it, detail it out with a small brush or buying new logos?

5. In as much as knotters can be fussy, are you painting them?

6. JD paint or rust-o-leum (or tractor supply) implement paint?

Thanks in advance!
Bill

I used Tractor Supply paint on a JD drill and after aging it turned from JD green to an off-blue color. No more TSC paint for me.

I did the same thing, mine turned from red to pink. For all the work it takes to paint something, it is worth getting good paint with hardener.

I've done a couple in reply to Bill VA, 04-16-2005 04:41:22
I wash the baler off REALLY GOOD first. The knotters get cleaned really good and painted as well. I Remove the fly wheel and drive line which is taken apart also. I paint these items by hanging them in the shop from the ceiling. The rims are removed and baler set on blocks.

Make sure there is no grease on the metal anywhere!!

I remove all the old decals with a heat gun and a sharp scraper carefully. Then sand the rusty spots clean and the rest where needed. I prime some places where there is bare metal.

For paint I use the stuff from the dealer and use a spray gun.

Decals I get from the dealer if possible or take pictures of the old ones before I destroy them. Then I get a sign/decal store to make decals from the pictures. I couldn't get decals for my NH278 anymore last time I tried. But I could get them for the 320 model. So I just got the 320 decals and made up the "278" decals I needed.

When its done right the baler looks "new". I've seen paint jobs on stuff and when you just paint over the decals and get over spray on the yellow parts and don't paint everything it doesn't look that great.

Most important thing is prep time before you go to painting.

I painted mine, and the big trick was getting it ready. It will take a lot of washing with a hose, and blowing with an air compressor to get it clean. Then a lot of wire brushing to get the surface ready. I sprayed mine with a cheap spray gun. Took about a gallon and a half, maybe two gallons. Paint the insides, and the corners, and crannies, and then spray whatever is left. You probably wont find original decals, but you should be able to find something similar to put on it. I didn't paint my knotters, I am almost superstitious about what happens to them.

I have an old Ferguson hay rake that I would like to paint someday. There is a lovely scripted "Ferguson" name on one part that I hate to paint over and I kind of doubt I could find reproduced anywhere. I asked a friend in the sign business about it. He said if I could give him a clear digital picture of the decal and some measurements he could make one from his high powered computer graphics programs. I haven't done it yet so I can't tell yet how close to the original it would turn out. There's also the question of copyright and licensing laws. I figured I'd let my friend the sign maker worry about that!

Jim,

Not to get off topic, but I am going in a few weeks to have a look-see at an old Ferguson rake. That is the only piece missing from my hay equipment line-up. The owner is an retired fellow who really takes care of his stuff and though I haven't seen the rake, he tells me it is in mint condition and barn stored.

Thanks!
Bill

Mine is a 3 point pto rake, 5 bar. They came in two sizes. The DE-O-20 is about a 7' rake and the DE-O-25 is about a 12' rake. Many of the parts from the later MF25 pto rake and the MF36 pull type rake are the same, ie, tines, basket ribs, even end wheels I think. The earlier Ferguson rakes had star wheels. The later ones have dish wheels.

I got mine for $125 but had to spend about $80 on driveshaft parts. It also needs some bearings on some of the bars. Check the bars where they attach to the end wheels to make sure there's not play. Grab the bar and shake it up and down. It should have no play. If it wiggles some, you'll need to replace that bearing eventually.

I will be painting my NH super 66 this spring. All decals will come off. I am hoping I can get a decal kit from dealer or from tractordecals.com. I had planned on taking the knotters off since i want to rebuoild them, then I will paint seperate from the baler. As far as paint I will just rust olium, van sickle or such. I will probably throw a clear coat over the whole thing to protect the paint. Hunerd buck baler but I dont want a bunch of rusty implements all over the yard. I also have a plow, disc, hay racks, 2 spreaders, topaint as well. Have fun painting.
