what you think about kuhn new HD --- vemeere new cutters runnings 600HD now and love it. want new cutter.8-9 ft. cutting costal in known pastures e texas, late nights till 1200 nidnight,which would you want on a 1976 case DB 1210(70hp) with lots of lights.need to cut down time and fuel.??? your thoughts please... ky hayman chime in if time, any thoughts from anyone or operator would be well taken. trust every ones thoughts

i run 2 9 ft kuhns both are hd..one has one season on it the other has 2 seasons...i have one that was used for 5 seasons kept it for back up..never had a bearing go out in it...changed oil every 100 hours on bar 50 on gear box...tried new idea, morra and sickle mowers...kuhn blows away all the ones we tried out..new idea was ok but was replacing 2 to 3 bearings a year, it had a short shaft that drove each head, after a while the shafts would wear and you could end up a half round off from 1 to seven. finally put in one shaft helped a lot...it was a good cutting mower but was high maintenance mower..you must remember that the kuhns travel over a lot of ground when i bale about 4000 rolls and average under 2 bales to the acre in east texas...just my 2 cents...have nice day may god bless

With a good dealer you can make any mower work. This is the problem with hay equipment of all types: Every farmer in your region harvest hay at the same time. Mowers, balers, tedders and rakes do not breakdown in the shed. So everyone is breaking down at the same time and a dealer only has so much capacity. Farmers today need a mower designed so down time is a minimum and repair time is kept to a minimum. We have been selling disc and drum mowers since the late 1970's. Most everyone's mower will mow hay we take them in on trade every day so we have to make them work. In 1987 we changed from the oil bath cutter bar design mower to the shaft drive Lely mowers. Average shop repair time went from 2 days to 3 hours. That statistic alone would convince me to purchase a shaft drive mower. The shaft drive mowers in the market that have proven to be well designed are Lely/Vermeer, New Idea & New Holland. The oil-bath cutterbar design mowers are higher maintenance, weigh more and take more HP to operate. Kuhn sells allot of mowers and they do work.

The simplest designed mower is the PZ style drum mowers. They were first in Europe in the late 1960's and still today are manufactured by 20+ companies.

ok have JD 265 as back up cutter . old type kuhn, run over 60 acres 3 times a year,plus all my contract work i was putting bearings in it every other year. new kuhn now two years old works fine,new blades go three years. i think my thought is SHAFT DRIVE or GEAR DRIVE . service is now from top, without splitting the board.i change oil every year. shaft is gear to pinion gear to (ring gear) vemeer or gear to gear (kuhn)
which has s longer (lower mantance) life

I pulled a GHM 800 BH brand with a 1210 and also put maybe a thousand hours in front of a 5408 NI on a 1210. Did fine, my favorite combination ever. As long as I have the kind of local dealer support Ive got now, I wont change from NI so I havent really looked at the new Kuhns. Given the choice between the BH and the NI (same dealer) Id go with the NI again every time.

In good hay the 1210 would SCREAM but did everything I ever asked it to pulling a 8' bar. All day on a pitance of fuel.
