Frost on my oats??

Seeded some oats last saturday and now they are calling for frost this saturday. Should I be worried or will the frost not hurt them?

Farming is a gamble. Likely you will have a better crop of oats with that type of weather, most of the time cool sprouting makes heavier oats.

If my dad were still alive he"d tell you that in order to make good heavy oats they need to be frosted a few times. A good frost in late April or early May will make them stool out he"d say. I"ve found that the earlier in the spring you get oats planted and up, the better the crop. So the frost won"t hurt them. A hard freeze will. I"d say that 20 degree figure is about the point of major damage.

a few years ago my local seed dealer sold me spring oats in the fall, me not knowing what the number was supposed to be, planted them.. they came up fine, looked good till about the middle of January... had a few survive all winter,, only to be plowed under.....

Frost won't hurt your oats. We have been getting it all week. They can stand temperatures down to about 20 degrees.

Are the oats even up yet? If not, you have nothing to worry about. If they are up, the tips may get recieve some damage, but in a short time they will recover and you will never know the differance.
