New Holland Bale Wagon

A fellow here has a NH model 1030 bale wagon that I think that I can get fairly cheap,like junk iron value,it has been sitting outside I guess all of it's life and has not been used in a few years. If I can get it what goes wrong with one of them? I know that I need to replace some of the hydraulic hoses and flush out the system,check all of the hydraulics what about the linkage and chains? The machine has alot of rust on it,should it be sandblasted and painted smooth for the hay to slide easily? This looks like a problem with them that the tables need to be smooth? What else do I need to check before using it? That is if I can buy it. Thanks

I bought a 1034 that had sat for over 5 years. It took some work to get it running, but they are good machines. Our main problem was sticky valves and the mechanical linkages binding and getting out of adjustment. It is important to keep it clean. A quick once over with compressed air each day works wonders.

Willy, I have a NH 1030 bale wagon that I use and have used for the last 7 years. I've had problems in a few areas, some minor and some not sop minor. The small drive chain occasionaly jumps off the sproket, I have replaced the chain but not the sprokets, that would help. The pickup will break the string on one side occasionally, it's worse in grass hay. The first table trip sticks if it gets any hay build-up in the mechanism and you have to keep it lubed with wd-40 or similar. The moving rack on the third table needs to be kept true in the track and the rollers and brake pads kept in good shape. If not when the second table brings a row of bales up and it happens to bind on one side it will bend things quickly. The hinge bolts on the third (dumping) table are a wear point. And Lastly you need to watch the push-offs and make sure they retract fully befror letting the third table back down. I learned alot in the first couple of years and fortunately the last couple have been pretty good, have'nt had to much trouble and I move a few thousand bales a year with it.

If it used metal tubing for hyd lines, they can be a bear to deal with if rusted up (splits) and may not show leaking until you have a load on it. Table tops do need to be smooth, but painting may not be necessary. We have almost no paint on the one we use and generally after a few loads it cleans up just fine. We do have problems with valves sticking (it sits out as well) and the "auto" trips take quite a bit of working to get moving right each spring. Check the frame for cracks. You get a rough rider on the tractor with a load and he can put alot of stress on it. Watch the bale rack (holds back of bales as you load on rear table) after you unload. Spring returns tend to stick and we have to hit the brakes to get it to come up the first few times. You don't what to be near it when it comes up.
