Sickle knife interchangable ?

Hi , I looked at and compared a knife for a JD 30 series sickle to my knife for a Oliver 415 . Before I try and stick it into the bar to see if it works ( and eliminate the possibility of returning it ) does or has anyone done this particular interchange ? They look mostly the same , same size ball head , same size sections , BUT the behind the head on the driven end is a little different . What else do I need to consider ? And a second question ; Which section is best for mixed mostly grass hay , about 10% alfalfa . I bought US and have serrated ledger plates . I am replacing a knife with smooth sections . The knife was bent on the outer end and the head end has been broken and brazed . Thanks for any input ...Randy

sorry, i didn't read youe post close enough, any farm supply store should be able to order you a sickle. i ordered three last year myself. they ran about $75 bucks, brand new. you will have to look under white to find oliver.

You say they look mostly the same but the head looks a little different. You must remember that the sickle must be timed. That means it must stop travel at mid point of the section matched with the guard tip. My personel prefrence is the upper serrated sections but if your sickle is not timed you will have trouble regardless of what type section you use. It doesnt take much out of time to be a pain in the neck and breaking of the sickle is a possibility with a sickle out of time.

Hi Sid , Thanks for the answer . I have the manuals for it and I checked to be sure the head to section distances were the same and they are . So are the section sizes . The only obvious difference is there is a short " tail " on the rear of the 415 head on the pitman end that the JD head lacks . It goes under the rear head wear plate . After looking closer at the parts book my suspicion is that there won't be enough outward travel under the head caps to hold the knife steady . I'll go out after work and see for sure , I just didn't want to get the new sickle dirty in case I had to return it . The farm store where I got it always gives a hard time on returns . If anyone has a parts machine in their grove I could sure use a unbroken head ! I need other parts for it also so a whole machine might be considered . Thanks again ....Randy

As a side question, is there a comparable sickle blade number for an Oliver Model 82 mower? The TSC catalog does not list any Oliver numbers. The blade is 8'.

Never heard of Oliver mower with 8' bar, only 7'.I have a 415 and they are identical except paint with Cockshutt or Moline 415 mowers, The semi mount and full mount all use the same cutter bar parts

The 7' bar has 28 sections with a total cycle length of about 8', an 8' knife would have 32 sections and a 6' would have 24 sections and I do have other make knives in my 415 but so long ago do not know make anymore.

try looking under white? that's where i find my parts for the 415, the parts that are still available anyways.

i use under serrated sections. i find them to work best. i have tried smooth and over serrated both. the replacements that i buy are #2 section at my local farm supply store. my 415 only came with one sickle so i ordered a few more and had them built with the under serrated rather than the smooth which is what their spec is. i also use bolts rather then rivets for ease of changing out.
