PTO shaft too long

I just purchased an Oliver Model 82 sickle mower yesterday at auction and upon mounting it on my Farmall M, I found that the PTO shaft assembly is about 8 inches too long. Can these be shortend or do I have to purchase a shorter assembly. Will shortening one upset its balance? Thanks for any help...Randy

Thanks again for all the replys guys. Upon further looking I have found that the rectangular portion of the slip shaft is only 4 inches deep, then it's all open in there. So much for shortening this particular shaft. Leroy raises a point that I hadn't thought of and that is being mounted too high at the drawbar, unleveling the machine and causing the blade to angle upwards thus diminishing cutting efficiency. I hope the operators manual is still in print...Randy

Hi , About the manual , try the Floyd Co. museum in Iowa (641) 228-1099. Hours are M-F 9:00 am to 4:30 pm central time . If it was made by or sold by the Oliver corp. they probably have the manual for it . That includes any name that was bought by them also . I think you may be mounting it to close to the tractor for the bar to work corect, it needs to have some distance from the wheel to bar so it will turn corectly. Get a manual and se if you are missing any brackets because if you are you will not be happy with it as it will not work corectly, also without the corect brackets I dont think you will be able to level(Tilt) the bar corectly as I think your tractor drawbar is too high off the groung to level the mower to working position. And for shortning you may just put the ujoints in a bind buy changing angle of shaft and a lot of shafts are a solid rectangular bar to keep you from misalignment on the joints inside a rectangular tube possibly thin wall with a reinforceing band on the end to keep the tube from breaking and I think this is what yours has, you cut that off and under a load it will split. the other type would have the rectangular hole in but be like a round bar or pipe on the outside and these will have a grease zerk close to the babk end and if you cut them off you loose the greasability that you need to keep the shaft sliding as it will be constantly doing in use as your ground will not be table top level. Make sure you have the corect hitch mounting and then unless your shaft was for a Ford it should be corect length

Thanks for the replys folks...This mower I bought is a semi-mount to the drawbar of my Farmall M, it's gonna end up on my H once the repaint is done. It's a real short-shot off the tractor PTO especially once I get the one-way pto clutch on there...no mounting brackets necessary. I'll havbe to sight down the shaft and see if there is anything preventing me from trimming it down a little. Thanks again.

Just reading your post again I see you mention a one-way pto clutch, if you are talking an over-running clutch like for use with a rotary mower you want to take that off as you do not want or need an overrunning clutch with a cycle bar mower

I have a #8W JD mower I have used on different tractors, I have 2 different PTO shafts I use. The mounting varies so much on different ones you about have to customize it. The one you have was probably fit to whatever tractor it was on. If you look in the mower parts book it shows many differnt combinations.

Most shafts can NOT be shortened, make sure you have the correct mounting brackets first then if mounted corectly then buy a corect length shaft

Had to shorten the shaft on NI 3pt hitch hay rake, to mount on Farmall 200. Used a hacksaw to saw off the square (rectangular) drive shaft. And a pipe cutter (gently tightened) to cut shield tube. Works OK for me. HAve to be careful about dimmensions, especially on short pto's.

Can't imagine a reason why one could not be shortened, 'though certainly it's possible; I've cut a-many-a-one off, being careful to remove correct amount from each piece..... ..

I don't think I have any odd shafts. But mine are all rectangular in cross section and all can be shortened, some have been.
