For those of you who show antique moldboard plows, what is your method of preserving the surface of the plow shares and moldboards? Just finished plowing with mine, but now intend to preserve for shows. I am torn between dropping it into the ground each time before a show in order to scour it up nice, or just priming and painting them with a flat or glossy black paint so they will not rust, but still look nice. I am interested in what others recommend. Thank you.

When I was a kid my job was to grease the shares & moldboard. Back in those days grease came in a five gallon pail. We used an old paint bush and brushed the grease on. If it looked like rain, they were greased overnight during the plowing season. The plows sat outside all year and the grease came off very quickly when the plow was dropped into the ground.

I paint mine with used motor oil and never let them sit out unprotected overnight.

Just a can of the cheapest flat black paint you can find and use it every day after use as well as a moldboard will rust over night and next day in 500' bottom will be shiney again. For every day use any color leftover you have on hand but for show use the flat black and that is what all moldboards had on them when they left the factory

Can of spray paint in a color that matches the plow. We used to paint the bottoms of our plow every year when we were done plowing for the year to protect them.

A flat black shade of spray paint looks the best in my opinion.
