Drain gearbox on bushhog?

I have one of the no-name TSC 5' bushhogs and I want to change the oil in the gearbox.

There doesn't seem to be a bottom drain. Am I missing something? I could turn the mower upside down but that seems excessive.

How about running the mower for a while to get the oil "thinned" up a little bit. It semmes to make a big difference on motor oil.

Why not turn it upside down ? Sit it on a couple of little bales , blocks of wood or something while it's like that, whip the blade off sharpen it and clean the underside of the machine if need be.

It is a great idea to use a suction gun and draw out the old oil. You would be surprised at the amount of condensation that developes. I drained the main gearbox on my MF #9 baler, a few years ago and must of got over a quart of water.

You can buy small suction pumps for $10 (most auto stores) that you can use to suck out the oil. Ones I have are orange tubes with a red body and black end caps.

I use the same thing on my vehicle rears and also on the auto transmissions. I usually suck out one to two quarts of tranny fluid and replace every time I do an engine oil change. That way I don't have to screw with the horrible pan drain mess. And if you keep the fluid fresh, there is no appreciable decomposition so the filter doesn't need changing.

With all due respect for your diligence, the bottom seal should start leak soon, and give you the oppurtunity to drain all of the oil and replace the seal at the same time.

Not fam. with that particular mower but you can get a simple hand pump and draw it out, slow and messy but workable. Looks like a basketball pump with a rubber tip.

Yeah, I agree.

I kinda want to clear debris and metal though. Also, after a bit the gearbox oil gets kinda sludgey and hard to hand-pump.

Yes you sure are right, but one can put some gas in the thing and soften up the sludge and then suck it out with a hand pump sucker, you know, some times these so called engineers who make these things would think a little and put a proper drain plug in these things, wonder how they get by in life some times..... good day my friend.

I would be leary of using gas. Too volitile. Kerosine would be safer.
