The post down below about planters/planter markers/combining made me think of a problem I've had for years: Most of my planting is done on the contour making watching the marker trail while sighting down the centerline of the tractor hood difficult. Greywolf had a great idea about the sighting device, but I can't see any way it would help with contour planting. It seems like everytime I go thru a curve I get too close to the previous row, and end up plowing out corn when I cultivate. Any thoughts? Jim.

On them curves drive so the marker mark is directly under your butt.Thas how I do it.Don't pay no attention to whats out front of the hood.

To help with the first pass, granted it's easier on the 2 and 4 rows. But with 10,12 etc it's a bit a of pain to "guess" that first pass. Specially when none of my property lines have fence rows.

I made a 1 shank "digger". I plant 10 X 30. I made it to hook into the pickup hitch and extends out so from the outside of the drivers side wheel to the "tooth" is 13 feet. I take the pickup out...hook it up...and with sighting just outside the window/door frame, I aim for the far field corner marker. Guide wheel from an old front wheel off a "Snapper" to maintain depth, my digger makes a nice mark to follow with the planter first pass. Straight right from the start.

Not hard to handle tossing it in the bed when the field is marked.

It was featured in Farm Show about 6 or 7 years ago.

I too plant sweet corn with a MF 39. Just a little 2 row but I have no markers. All I did was attach a 1" pipe to the front my 8N and drop a little chain. Just lik Indy my first pass is eyeballing. But I know what to offset the chain by so I I have fairly close rows.

We plant quite a bit of sweet corn every year. I use a 2-row planter for that. After getting used to planting with the 8-row planter and it's hydraulic row markers, I decided to "invent" a good way to mark my rows while using the little 2-row.

I plant the first pass by sight. I've installed an old "hoe-type marker" on each side of the toolbar. Across the front weight bracket on the tractor, I have a piece of 1" pipe, with elbows pointing down, then a "drop" of 1" pipe that lines up on the hoe mark. I never have to look back. It stays right on track when going around curves, and was CHEAP!
