Just posted a photo on the implement ID page. Any idea on age and model number? Noticed another one indicating maybe 851 or 858 but I have no idea if he is correct on either number.

It looks like my 851 except you have more paint on yours. The Parts book I have is for the 850 series which includes the 858 also so a lot of parts are the same. The 858 had a yellow "arch" bar. The numbers on the plate on the reel are similar on mine, think it is the real number or something. Don't think these had a serial number on them. The duel wheels on the back are options for more flotation. Mine has them also. It is a good rake.

Wow! - Great info on the dates. Thanks very much. Do you guys have a good source for replacement teeth? I noticed Burns out of Whitewater WI lists them as available.

I think you are correct. I went back to the books, and the frames of the 851/858 and 894/896 look very similar, but the basket crank goes over the top and horizontal on the 894/896 and passes below the frame at a slight upward angle towards the front on the 851/858. The one posted picture looks like it runs below the frame. The 1956 Modern Farming shows the 851 but none of the others. The 1960 Modern Farming shows the 851 was replaced by the 858 and the 894 and 896 were also available. The 1965 Modern Farming, introduces the 640 and only shows the additional 350. From this I assume that 1964 was the last year of production for the 858,894 and 896. Hope some of this proves worth-while. According to the books, the 851 and 858 were the heavy duty rakes

The one I looked at appears to be a model 894 or 896. Later models were 894A and 896A. I have a 5 bar 896A. I believe they were made in the 60's. I think late 50's also and maybe early 70's. If no one else gives any better info, I'll try tonight to zero it in better.

While we are on this subject, I have an 850 series rake and have a large adjuster with eyelets on both ends just behind the hitch going up and down. I noticed most other rakes in this series have an adjuster with a handle. Has mine been replaced or is this one of the series and the other is another number in the series. These are good rakes except for mine last season started popping into neutral and I havent looked into it yet. I will try to post some pics if I get time
