The problem with 6 row planters for corn you need a 3 or 6 row combine head or it becomes difficult to harvest the crop. Now 3 row heads are made they just are not as popular as 4 row heads and to use a 6 row the size of the combine becomes a issue. Now if your going to use it for soybeans no problem just clip the beans you can do this with dry beans but you suffer more waist as the beans are closer to the ground. I'll try to show this below notice how the space between row 6 and 7 varies thus making harvesting difficult if you must take off row 6 with row 7.

I always set the planter marker to match the centerline of the tractor, not the front wheel. Also set the markers two inches wide, since I planted with an 830 and combined with a 430 combine with 28 inch tires that went over the center between rows. It is important to watch for the 'V' of the mark- not the dirt thrown to the side. I always set the 7000 markers very aggressively- even torched out the adjusment slot to get more range, so it threw a good furrow in the dark and I could see it.

I have to agree. I used to plant with a 4 row and have it harvested with an 8 row. Just have to be careful about skip row. Set your markers so you have something down the middle of the tractor to sight down.

I have heard a lot of different opinions on either staring right down the radiator cap at the mark, or following it with the front wheel of the tractor. I have a drag chain on a pole out front of the tractor that you have to match up in the previous outisde row. I plan to set up markers on my corn planter for this spring. Would it be best so they mark down the center of the tractor or in the wheel?

The difference in planter/combine is something that is done on almost every farm around here.

Personally myself I plant 10....pick 6.

If you want some assistance on keeping straight rows on the cheap, try this optical illusion.

Works great with a cab, but can work open platform to.

Find center of the hood way up front. Extend a rod painted white about 24" up from top of hood. On the windshield, find center at put a strip of electrical tape vertically about 3" long. While driving focus on the mark/front rod. Your eyes will see "2" pieces of tape. Keep the rod and planter mark within the "2" tape marks and you will be lined up perfectly.

Open platform just put another rod painted a different color close to the steering wheel. Just focus "out front" your eyes will do the rest.

sounds weird but it works. Got the idea after seeing a device set up similar for $100 sold to the public.

Be careful on some cab tractors - they offset the tractor seat 2" to make room for the hand controls - messes up marker following.

I can eyeball a lot better on an open station tractor. Guess I'm an outdoors kinda guy.

Your marks & tape plan works good, that is the way to do it.

Never knew that on the seat paul.

My 2590 has a cab big enough for three and is a swivel. I know the seats centered cause my gut lines up perfect with the center mark and steering wheel.....LOL.

My dad was the same way on open platform. Only he could center the narrow front with a wheel in the mark, not the center. He always said it was centered, but when I planted I was always 3" off round to round, every round. When I started checking, one marker was 3" shorter than the other, he could put a lot of GPS autosteers to shame in his day. But he never would admit he followed wheel to mark....it was ME than couldn't see straight.....LOL.

Thanks. I guess the older I get the less I pay attention. I think I'll try the stick and chain approach to see if that improves my rows.

Following the wheel, bumps & bubbles tend to grow larger & get worse.

Following down the middle, one can 'sight through' and correct slight errors as they develop.
