Have a 489 haybine and the rolls are starting to lose the rubber- how big a project is it to replace the rolls? Can I assume two rolls will run $1,500 +/-?

I changed them on a 499 several years ago and they were $1700 for the pair then as I remember. It really wasn't bad to do as the rolls stayed in the frame and we dropped the header off to get access to them. I don't recall if a 489 is like that or not. The bottom roll came off, then there was a slot to drop one end of the top one. I did have a helper to drop the old ones and get the new ones put in as they are pretty heavy.

It is a fairly big job and it is really helpful to have an assistant when you tackle this job. Your estimate of $1500 for two new rolls is fairly close. The rolls have to be timed to each other to mesh properly. In our area, you can buy a fairly decent 489 for $2000-$2500 at an auction, sometimes even less. I'm not sure it is even worth doing unless the rest of the haybine is really in mint condition.

I'm in upstate NY and seems like good 489's are bringing $4,000+ If I could find a good used haybine for $2,000 to $2,500 I would go that route and sell this 489 off
