Old No-Till Drills

I rented a No-Till drill to plant a 5 acre pasture last fall. The drill worked great, but the place I rented from doesnt really want to bring it the whole way to me for only 5 acres.I was thinking of seeing if I could find an old small drill that needed work. Possibly even a 3 point hitch model. The problem is I dont even know of any old model #'s to search for or if anyone even made a 3 pt model. The great plains/sukup??/JD drills in my area are 7K and up, and thats way out of the price range. Anybody got any ideas? I can fabricate just about anything out of steel...so I could do some changing/ modifying if need be. Ideas??

Some guys around Missouri, where I am, say you can modify an Allis Chalmers no till planter to drill grass and legumes. spacing is wider but they cross hatch the pasture and claim good results. never have tried it myself, but solid old Allis #800?, I think planters sell around here for $300 and less. Anybody know anything about this?

I've looked at buying one on more than one occassion. There are several 7-10' ones for sale around here each year. Only problem is they are worn out rental units. Most of them bring $1500 plus at auction or sealed bid. Add in $500 worth of bearings to bring them up to shape.

Small drill are available. They are hard to find in the northern states. I bought a Tye 80" drill several years ago. None of the Dealers around here, northwest Ohio, knew anything about it. I finally called Tye in Texas. They were very helpful and sent Manuals and parts books. I have more information than my dealer does. I have seen Buffalo and Marliss drills under 10 feet. Many companies made 10' pull type drills, but good ones will be expensive. Two words of caution. No-till drills need weight to get in the ground. Three point drills are heavy. It takes a good hydraulic system and front end weight to lift one. I have a 70 HP tractor and front weight. I don't need that much tractor to pull the drill, but I'm glad I have that much tractor to lift it. When it is full it is heavy. Secondly, you can't fabricate coulters and bearings. Be careful about buying one to fix up. You can soon get alot of money in a drill. AND, wore out no-till or seed coulters cost you money. With all that said, good luck finding one. It is nice to have your own equipment.

Have a neighbor that has a drill? Could you offer to work for him in trade for using his drill? Just a thought.
