Another question since I am so new at this and the folks on this board are so helpful. Need a rotary cutter (we call them bush hogs where I was raised) to cut fields. Priminary straw and corn stakes, briars, some small brush. Will use on 53 hp pto, need 10 to 12' or so unit. Will probably buy from dealer.

Can anyone recommend a brand and suggested price range???

Not a good idea in reply to Grady in VA, 03-28-2005 15:41:37
I have a 55HP PTO. I use a 6' John Deere mower to do my bushhogging. I considered 7' but wanted to keep the width of the mower at exactly the width of the rear tires. That way I could mow fencelines as close as I can get the rear wheels without worrying about the mower hitting fence posts. The largest mower I would have considered for my 55HP would have been 8' and that would have been pushing it. My guess is that you won't be too happy with the results of using such a large mower with so little PTO HP.

I have a 53 HP tractor and I have a 6 foot King Cutter than works fine. I chose 6 foot because I didn't want to get something that would be a nuisance to pull down the road if I have to get on the highway. I could have got the 7 foot but he didn't have one on hand. The King Cutter does make a heavy duty which I have. The regular units are a little lighter built.

My thinking is that I wouldn't want to go over 7 foot. Usually you are talking twin spindles and to me that is just twice the stuff to break or tear up and the cost really jumps over 7 foot.

I went through this decision about 2 weeks ago. I was looking for something for my Farmall M that has about 40hp at the PTO and has an aftermarket 3 pt hitch.

I ended up with a 6' off brand economy cutter from the local Case/IH dealer for $850. The Rhino, Bush Hog, John Deere, etc. cutters are going to start at $1,250+ for a 6' model.

On all of them if you go past 6' the price goes up dramatically. You could probably run a 7' with a 50hp tractor IMO. My M runs the 6' pretty good in fairly thick brush. If I'm mowing small mesquite trees and really thick stuff I have to gear down though.

The 8' and 10' cutters use 2 sets of blades instead of 1 set of blades on the 7' and under models so they actually use less hp than a 7'. The rhino 8' model states that it will run on 35hp. Of course you are well over $2,000 when you get to the 8' models. Since that was more than I paid for my tractor I quit looking at that range. I did see some 10' name brand models that were over $4,000.

Other options are looking for used mowers that might be more affordable but it seems to me that the prices on 5 or 6 year old mowers that look pretty rough are still 50% or more of a brand new mower and so I just ended up going with a brand new economy one. The brand I ended up with was a "Cimarron".

10-12' on 53 HP? I don't think that would work too good, our 165 massey w/continental gas(about 44 HP) can barely handle our neighbor's 5' unit in medium height grass, anything taller and we have to take 1/2 swat at a time. As far as brands, Woods, Land Pride, and Bush Hog are a few of the good brands. I think JD also has their own line. King Kutter's are ok economy units, but won't hold up to heavy use and won't like corn feilds if they have rocks sticking out.
