I need some information on New Holland Haymakers Handbook. How many versions are there etc.. I have seen three different ones so far.. They are also prettt pricey on ebay..

norten - I don't know how many versions there are, but I got my first one in 1967. In those days , they were actually hard-covered. I don't really think there has been a lot of change in the information within, as I have several later copies in soft cover (during the 70's&80's)

The only one of those books I"ve seen went for about $50.00 on ebay.

Is there valuable information there or mostly nostalgic stuff?

BC - I haven't seen the latest Handbook but would assume that it wouldn't change all that much. After all, hay making really hasn't changed all that much over the years. I realize that hay crops and management procedures vary across the country, but this book gives one the basics to those getting started. Unfortunately, hay has taken a back seat to the more "glamorous" crops of soys and corn (less work)and much of the basics have been forgotten. I gave each of my sons a copy and it's amazing how often they refer to it. Sometimes , the best way to get ahead , is to look back !!

I have the 1967 book. I like it alot because it explains making hay with the equipment that I use (old stuff).
It talks about Planning, Soils and how to shape them up for a good crop.Funamentals of fertilization,Quality of seed, Making a hay stand take,Frage management between seasons,Irrigating hay crop,Insect control,Harvesting ( this is the best part as it explains harvesting using the equipment that was new at the time, Bale handling, Plus a whole lot more. Quite a bit in a small book. $50 seems quite high. I got mine off Ebay a couple years ago and paid $25.
