I just bought two JD planter units to make a two row gaerden planter with. They appear to be designed for a cultivator frame mount, similar to a Covington or Cole unit. Other than green paint and the JD decal, the only numbers on them are "23-C". Can anyone help me ID them and tell me what kind of plates are avaible? Thanks!

You described them as well as anyone could.... They are #23C unit planters, built in the mid 60's to early 70's. They were an economy planter unit, made to attach to RG series toolbar cultivators. They use the standard Deere "type B" plate. They are available from Lincoln Ag. Do you have the fertilizer attachment?

Thanks, I was hoping you would see my post and reply. I was looking for a set of toolbar mounted units and only realized that these were different after I had bought them. I got lucky because I already have a set of Covington cultivators and they will bolt right up. I don't have the fertilizer attachments, I assumed they would be altogether separate. What other JD planters use the "B" plates? I have a friend who has a lot of plates for a 494...

Same plates. Deere used only 2 types of seed plates. The first ones were used in some of the earliest planters. From the 30's on, the plates were all the same. Your friends plates should work just fine.

I have a 1969 Deere planter add in front of me right now. It list's the 23 as available in 3 models. The 23C attaches to 3-point hitch 2 or 4 row rigid cultivators. There was a 23F that attached to 2 or 4 row front mounted cultivators and the 23R that attached to 1-3/4" to 2-1/4" toolbars.

The 23C is listed to attach to Deere RR@, RR$, RG2, RG4, and 4650 cultivators.

The fertilizer attachment is pictured, but NOT described in the planter book. It looks very much like the Cole?Covington fertilizer set-up. I'm searching high and low for 4 rows worth of those fertilizer units....

There's a loop at the front of each unit at the bottom that looks like it's for the tube from a fertilizer distributor, but the man I bought them from said he never had them. I'll be looking for some now myself, but it's not likely I'll find any in salvageable condition locally (s/w MS). Anything that comes in contact with fertilizer here rusts fast because of the constant high humidity. Also, my brother is looking for 4 no-till coulter and chisel foot assemblies for a Cole 400 series planter. His inadvertently went to the scrap yard while loaned to a neighbor... Thanks again!
