Sq Baler Advice Needed

My neighbor has an IH-430 small sq baler. His father bought it from a paper company. It was used inside to bale paper waste products. He used it only on farm to bale small fields, very few bales run through it, until his tractor broke down. The baler has sat outside for about 15 years. Looks complete, some rust, lots of dust collected, etc. I can get the baler for about $100 or $200. Question: would it be worth bringing back to life, what should I look at, what are the pitfalls? I would use to bale 10-15 acres, 2-3 cuttings, per year. Thanks. Tom

I would go for it, I bought a MF 12 baler last year for $50.00. I was going to use the flywheel to make a chipper out of it. Since it was complete, I cycled it a few times by hand, ok , then hooked up to a tractor and cycled it about 10 times, no problems. I changed all the fluids, greased it up, replaced 4 pickup teeth and put in some twine. I baled up 500 bales with it. Had some problems with some old twine wrapped around the duck bill. Removed the old twine and when the rust polished off, the unit works flawlessly.

Heck for a 100 bucks I would go for it if it turns out to be beyond repair you can always list it on this site and part it out,a lot of old balers will be needing parts in 6 weeks anyway so go for it.

Here, I'd run far and fast. SW WI freeze-thaw cycles will decimate a perfect machine in 15 years. Texas, with hot, dry weather it might be ok.

If you're looking for something to resurrect and don't care how much you spend, go for it.

If you're looking to put it to work for very little money, you might be better off looking for something that's been used more recently. The knotter mechanism is a scary thing to fix if you don't know what you're doing - get the timing off and you're out the cost of two needles. A fully functioning, shedded 273 NH or 14T deere here SW WI will cost sub 1000 dollars, pry in the area of 300-750 bucks.

I feel different about this, price means nothing when theres hay on the ground, it's hot, and you have help coming to load or buy your bails that arent there. If you want to bail hay get something that will bail hay.

A $6K used round baler is a far better buy than a $100 square baler any day, any time.

Get the hay up and quit that silly foolishness. :>)

Go for it, I bought an old Int. 46 that looks like it was never inside. It bales fine and it is so much fun just to get it out yearly and use it. I have had several offers to triple the $100 that I gave for it, which are always politely turned down.

I too must agree with Joe,I have a J.D. 116 wire tie that the neighbors had a field day laughing at me over, it looked terrible I cleaned it and oiled it up I didn't replace the main drive belt until last year and I have ran 5000 bales through it. My farm isn't that big but because it is a wire tie I am doing all the neighbors straw!!!! As far as the money goes it costs me $200 every time I run out of wire.

I've had 2 IH balers, a 27 and a 435. from my experience I will never own another IH baler. The knotters are JUNK! Just when you think you've got them tuned up they'll start missing. Better to pay more for a NH, JD, MF or even an Oliver than an IH.

I don't totaly agree with the earlier posts. $200 is nothing for a baler. If the baler is in fairly good conditon and not worn out or inside rusted away, you should be able to use it. My baler has never seen the inside of a barn and has worked with few problems for years. Very few people around here keep their balers inside. I paid $200 for it and replaced 2 bearing and went to work. Replace the chains if stiff, put in new wire(or twine) and give it a try. If it does not work sell it for scrap and get your money back.

I definately would not be interested if it has been sitting outside. If it was in pristine condition for the same price, I might be a little interested, but not a lot. In s.e. PA New holland and John Deere balers are the only ones that are worth anything. A nice allis chalmers or international will bring very little at auction, and i've never seen anything but NH and JD in the fields, except a few hesstons or similar machines.

Tom, If the only reason to rebuild the baler is using it, you can probably get a less expensive baler. By less expensive I am referring to the cost of rebuilding, which is unknown at this time, not the 1-200 dollars to buy the machine. I would prefer to save it as I love the old machines.
You need to decide if your time and money is worth the satisfaction and bragging rights you'll have when complete.
Let us know what you decide and if you buy it post pictures as you fix it up.
