I found a decal inside the lid of the left seed box with the directions for setting the seed spacing. At the top it says the decal is for the settings of model 39 and 78 planters. So does anyone have an idea or do I just flip a coin?

Catalog mentions it in print only, apply fertilizer, kill weeds, kill bugs. So it sounds like those boxes could have been options, but I'll bet you could put boxes on it from Gandy or any other supplier.

I have an Original Massey ferguson parts manual for a model 78 Planter and this one in the manual looks bigger and a little different then your picture. Looks like a four row and 4 can for fertilizer. The manual was issued april 1968. if further question my mail is [email protected]

Dieselrider - I have a 39 planter and got a fotocopy of manuals and parts book from a Massey dealer. Don't see any reference for insecticide boxes. Paid $25 at an auction.

Thank you Jim, I thought they wouldn't have that option but, had to see. Is your photo copy clear enough that you would be able to copy it? I would be willing to pay you for yoor time and shipping if you are willing. I have left my email open on this in case you want to contact me, just remove the quotations. Thank you again, now I know what to look for.

2 row is a 39. Double to 4 rows, double to 78. Found it in a 1970 catalog.

Thanks Tom, That makes perfect sence too. I'll definetly be looking for a manual. Although everything on it seems real simple. Your old catalogue there wouldn't happen to say weather they had insecticide boxes for these would it. Thanks for the help, you made my day.

Tom: He is concerned on what to look for in a manual. Probably the same manual covers both.

Dieselrider: Probably both planters have the same seeding mechanism, thus same chart will work for both.

Thanks Hugh, That's what I am thinking too but, what I'd really like to know is which model I have in order to look for a manual. I might be able to find one at one of the antique tractor shows. They usually have guys there with a graet selection of manuals for all kinds of stuff. The correct model number would just simplify the search process quite a bit.

Dieselrider: Do you know who the manufacturer was? The model numbers 39 or 78 I do not recognize. I've owned 3 two row planters in my day, an IH, a Deere and a Sidewinder, it doesn't look like any of those. From the photo I would have said M-F, but there were others that looked much the same.

Get as much information as possible from any emblems, plates, etc. A couple more photos with different angle could help. A lot of these planters were very close, two model number may only indicate an attachment added. With enough information, someone will recognize it.

Her is another angle. It is definetely a Massey Ferguson planter. What Tom has in his catalogue makes sence. So unless someone else has a better idea, I'll be looking for a manual for a model 39. You are right too in that one manual may very well cover both models. Thanks again.
