Used disc mower advice

My brother in law has a 260 John Deere disc mower he's trying to sell me. Mower looks good for its age, gears between discs have just a little play, {if you grab two disc and turn them you can get just a little freeplay, maybe a 1/4" before other disc turns} is this acceptable? Any known weaknesses on a 260? Anything else that I need to check?

Have had a 270 for several years; cut lots of hay; only problem I've had is with seal in lift cylinder; seal kit is about $65.00 and it's now on it's third one. Have also had Tarrup and Bush Hog; all worked good when new, but I like the Deere much better..... ...I agree with James, the freeplay sounds normal.

The wear or play you have found sounds normal to me. I would check the oil level and condition in the cutter bar and gear box. Also see what the belts look like. If you do get the mower, the first thing I would do is remove each disc and clean the hay,twine and wire that might have collected there. You can also get him to put it in gear for you and let it run for about 10 minutes. Shut it off and feel around for hot spots with your hand. If you can't hold your hand there you have a bearing going out.
