What size mower conditioner will work with my M?

I want to get a mower conditioner to replace my sickle mower and rake. What size will it handle, I've heard the M will handle a 7 foot, but there are not too many of them around. Mostly what I see are 9 foot. Also any recommendations on which are the best, I know I'm going to get quite a few different opinions here.

Thanks,
Bobg

I pull a 9 foot case 555 with my H every year, I wouldnt trade my 555 for anything,, I can mow in 3rd or 4th with no problems, I have had other kinds, but this one has been the easiest to pull and so far has been very reliable,,I also rake, bale and haul my hay with my H,Jim

I pulled my NH469 with a Farmall H for two seasons without any troubles and thats less then 35 hp. Live power would've been nice, but I managed. I have since switched to an Oliver 1800 for obvious reasons.

Will come down to speed mostly - more power would be more efficient, drive at speed all day long. But not a big deal for hobby size....

Love your handle. Wish I had thought of it.....

An M is plenty for a 9-ft haybine. Live PTO would be nice, but with a haybine once you get her rolling you don't have to stop for anything til the field is done. Making square corners is a must especially if you don't have LPTO. I ran a 479 NH (9ft 3in) for years with a 460-not much more than an M. Stuffed her in top side of 2nd at 9AM & didn't stop til the field was done. The 479 is for sale here in s.w. Pa-finally went discbine & Diesel. The old 479 & 460 was a tremendous rig.

Haybine does not replace a rake... in reply to Bobg, 03-15-2005 10:06:13
Keep the rake you will still need it unless you live in Arizona. Never pulled a Mower/conditioner with our M but we have used it on a flail chopper. I have to agree with the others about the live PTO. I would bet you would be happier with a seven footer.

Yea you still want to rake 2 windrows into one. No need to just wear out your baler baling twice as many rows as you need to.

New Holland 469 would be a good one. requres 35HP to run it. SHould be able to find one pretty cheap. I run one with a 400 and it rocks!!!

Have a 479 (Looks much like the 469 pictured-just one model newer)for sale . Ran it with 4 or 5 tractors-preferred the Farmall 460. Effortless smooth running rig. You're correct -the book says you need 35 hp.

If you are in business & looking at acres & acres of hay, the M without live pto would not be a good tractor to start with, and it would not keep up with a 9 foot all day long when you need to make hay now.

For a hobby operation with a few acres, it should pull a 9' ok. Perhaps you will have to slow down a gear now & then, but so what. Your M would need to be in good condition & good clutch, not tired.

Thick lush alfalfa or thin grass hay makes a difference as well. I guess for average hobby hay, the 9 foot should work as others have said.

My opinion. I run a JD 1209 with an 85 hp tractor, ran it with a 45 hp tractor a few times, would prefer 60 - the bigger one is too heavy for the ground, the smaller one is kinda light & pto is getting weak.... Live pto would be a lot better tho.

An M will pull a 9ft just fine, we pulled a New Holland 461, 469, and 479 with a Utility 330 for years also with an M. Used the 330 more because of the live power.

My recomendation is to go with a 7ft cut. I have run 4 different nine footers over the years. PT 10 heston. M would handle that fine. 880 Gehl, required 45 hp to run effectivly. Now I use a 1219 JD, and like 70 hp+ on that, and a 2175 Gehl and use 80hp+ on that. All depends on the machine. Older units require less hp. If you go with the seven foot, I don't think you'll ever be short on hp. Now, running a haybine without live pto is a whole different story. It can be done..... , but I wouldn't want to do it.

A lot of the 9 footers I have looked at were being pulled by a Farmall M. I don't know how well it handled them. You have to watch on the newer ones that the HP rating doesn't exceed what you got. I have an MTA and I am looking to get into a 9 footer although a 7 would be a little easier on the gates around here. Most people are going to go NH Haybine I would bet on a recommendation. I have heard good things about the JD MoCos though. There are a few "off" brands out there that are cheaper. Heston PT series older models can be very reliable and cheap to buy by comparison. Watch for good rollers. They all have gearboxes and drivelines that have to be watched for wear. Other than that how well has it been taken care of? All of my info is second hand as I am currently where you are....looking for a good old mower. The more you look the more you learn.

I gotta 7' John Deere 1217 I'd like to get rid of. It is a good cutter, cut 100 acres with it last year. I just want to upgrade since I got a bigger tractor.I'd take $1250 for mine.
