My father bought a new one around 1978! And it never broke down (not once)! It never plugged up either in even the most tangled crops.

We bought a new 489 in the early 80's, used it on a few hundred or more acres every year until 2 yrs ago. Never had any major problems with it until everything started getting worn. wobble dr gear box and did some welding where the pole pivots on the machine.Overall it was a reliable machine for many years...Jim

My problems were drive line and boom. Drive line is encased and a bear to work on and the boom bends easily and doesn't easily slip from field to road positions. Otherwise worked like any other. Can't beat the price if it works.

I own two 489's. The second one I purchased for $750. I put just under $100 in fixing it. I have cut about 150 acres of hay per year for 4 years now with no problems. Some words of advice-make sure that you check the wobble box oil level before the season. It also wouldn't hurt to check it now and then during the season. I didn't do that on my other 489 and the wobble box was ruined as a result. The wobble box is quite spendy to replace. Another thing, make sure that your cutter bar is relatively straight and your guards and hold downs are in good shape. Farmers have a tendency to let these go too long before changing them. Worn out guards and hold downs will cause the wobble box to go bad as the sickle has too much up and down slop.

Make sure the bushing on the drive head of sickle bar is in good shape and keep it greased. It can get to much play in it and let the weights in the back hit frame work and take out the gearbox

If it is in really good shape like you say, you did very well. Hard to say without seeing it, but I can tell you I have looked at a slew of them and never saw a 489 for $500. By the by, I am in the market for a mower conditioner. If anyone in the lower Michigan or northern Ohio and Indiana area has a nice lower priced one or knows where one is, could you shoot me an email? Time to retire the sickle bar, I'm afraid.
